Cleaning lens elements?

What's the best way to clean the front element on a lens from things like smudges and dust? I'm a bit paranoid about scratching either then glass itself or the coating on the front.

Please also take note of the use of UV filters at the end of the article - they are good investments for expensive lenses.

I use pec pads and eclipse fluid, the best you can use IMO just google for them

I've read some interesting things about UV filters so would only use one if I really had to, then probably go for a skylight filter. But at 82mm filters for my expensive lens arent cheap.

They are`nt as expensive as a scratched front element....

True, about a third of the price with my Sigma 24-70 though, which is why I'll wiat until I get some spare money first.
