It appears that my mirror has got a bit dirt, it has about 2 small specks of something on it.

I know this doesnt effect image quality as its not on the sensor but will it effect anything else..? Or is the mirror just for the view finder..?

And whats the best way to clean them..? Its a Canon 7D if that makes a difference.

Basically the only real option is to use a blower, like the rocket blower. The downside is you risk scattering the dust, maybe even onto the sensor.

For what its worth, if you're not getting any dust bunnies on your finished picture, leave things well alone or take it to a reputable camera shop who can undertake the work and have it properly cleaned, which aint necessarily going to be cheap...

Mirrors are fragile, they are designed to be light and any interference with them is likely to damage the surface

Crap on the mirror doen't affect pictures.

The first thing to try would be a rocket blower and if that doesn't shift it maybe a clean and grease free brush or pec pad.

Some will tell you to on no account touch the mirror but all I can say is that in decades of using SLR's and DSLR's I must have cleaned my mirrors hundreds of times without incident.
 
Ah, sorry...

It's a blower and it's shaped like a rocket... so you can play with it when you are not using it as a blower :lol:

They have a filter in them so they don't suck dust up and blow it into your camera. There are different ones and photo shops sell them.

Thought that might be the case of just trying a blower. Just heard that some people on about the focus mirror or something..? So thought a clean might be needed.
 
If you can see dust when looking through your viewfinder it could be on the viewfinder, one the mirror or on the focus screen. You'll see the focus screen if you look inside and up. If the muck is inside the viewfinder itself you're probably stuffed and will need to send it in for a clean.

Personally I find dust in the optical path very very annoying. I'd rather have a dirty sensor as I can clean it no problem.
