I have recently purchased a second hand Nikon D300 and there is a few marks which i presume to be dust or dirt on the mirror which are visible through the view finder. I have tried a simple air blow gun to clean the mirror but it hasn't shifted them. Is the best way to get a speacialist to clean it to risk not damaging it myself?

Tbh if it's on the mirror it won't affect the photo and if you can live with it leaving it is the best approach

If you can see it through the viewfinder, it will almost certainly be on the underside of the focusing screen, above the mirror. Anything on the mirror, or lens, will be invisible.
A bit of dust here and there is a fact of life
Or between the focus screen and prism, damned rocket blower!
Easily cleaned if you know what your doing, easily broken if you don't.

It won't show up on images, unless there is dirt actually on the sensor - in which case you won't see it through the viewfinder.
If the underside of the focusing screen is clean, then you're unlucky and something has got inside the viewfinder (which is why I said almost certainly
).Just to make the point about dust being ever-present in some shape or form, you will probably find there's muck on your sensor too if you shoot a plain wall at f/22, which doesn't show up at lower f/numbers.
