Cleaning my lenses...

So I have 3 lenses, and one has picked up some dust on the lens which is obvious when you view a picture, in about 3 places.

Being a naive young man, I have no idea how easy it is to clean the lens, and if it's a dodgy prospect how you get it done professionally.

Some people have said you just put some alcohol down there and clean it out (or words to that effect) but I was hoping someone could enlighten me how to do it, or any recommendations in and around Coventry on how to clean the lenses?

Thanks

You will not see any dust that is on the lens on an image, the dust specs you are seeing on the image are on the sensor.

Best thing to try first for the lens, and the sensor is using a "Rocket" bulb blower to blast the dust off with air, do not use a canned air as this will spray propellant as well.

Martyn is quite right, unless, as you imply, only one lens is giving you this problem. So the first thing is to test for dust on the sensor; see this link and look halfway down the page. Testing with the lens shut down to f11 / f16 means that dust on or in the lens shouldn't show itself. A clear sky can also be used instead of a card (more practical when out and about).

If the sensor is not your problem then dust may show up in shots taken with a lens at wide apertures. It may be visible on or inside the lens. For the former have a read of this thread where you will find plenty of opinions (including my own)!

For dust inside the lens, which is not likely to be your problem if only because it is not usually a problem, the only recourse is to have the lens serviced.

Looks like it's not that serious and I'll try to get a rocket blaster and see if that works.

I'll try to keep you up to date with how it goes.

Well, I bought a little blower off amazon, it came today, and I have cleaned a lot of dust off the lenses. Result = much clearer pics I think - it's a very dour day here, and I don't have a white card to do the testing on.

But thanks, and yes cleaning the lens with the brush and blower was painless.
