Hi, as a newbie I would be grateful for advice on the basic necessities required to keep my camera gear in tip top condition (and dos and don'ts would be helpful too). Specific types or makes that are recommended would be helpful too.

The sort of things I mean are lens cleaning cloths, solution, blower etc. The last thing I want to do is damage my kit by doing or buying the wrong thing.

Thanks

Dan

dont bother buying lens cloths they are expensive and you can get them for free if you 'pretend' you lost your glasses cloth at your local optician ;)

I have a large cloth that came with a dell monitor too that seems pretty good but would prefer new as I don't want to use something that might have accumulated dirt that might scratch a lens.

I would also prefer a non-aerosol solution as it will be taken with me when travelling.

Is a blower necessary/useful?

Rocket blower - blows major crap and dust off. Never use canned-air on a camera.
1.5" paintbrush - brushes major crap and dust off.
Old toothbrush - gets any major crap off that the two above leave behind - use moist for best results.
Flannel face-cloth - use damp to remove dirt, salt-spray and ingrained mud and sweat (I keep a moistened one in a zip-loc bag in my camera-bag).
Jeweller's screwdriver set - screws will loosen.
Lens-brush (not for use on anything else)
Lens-cloths (microfibre-type) - I got mine from calumet - 2 types: a thick-ish one and a thin 'shiny' one...
Arctic Butterfly - I was gifted mine by the kind peeps here while I was in Afghanistan - use to clean your sensor when you get more daring...

Go and have a look at flash in the pans thread (in advertisers section) he does a rocket blower and a lens pen which has a brush too. These two cost about £6 or something like that, he also sells CCD wipes for cleaning the sensor.

Thanks, just what I was looking for. What is a lens pen exactly and are they any good?

It has a high density brush at one end and a softer brush at the other which collapses away into thing which resembles a marker pen. You can basically use them for cleaning the camera and lenses.

Ok, thanks, I'll have a look at the thread you suggested as I like to look after my gear.

I've found his thread but can't find any reference to these. Do you have a link? If not, don't worry, I'll just pm him.

Thanks

Dan

He is selling so much now that it might be easier!
