Clearing last years images

I want to shift the bulk of last years images over to external hard drives off the internal drive to free up space, how do I get lightroom 2.5 to start a new catalogue and look for the images on the ex hdd?

Select all the ones you want to move (a smart collection is a good way of doing this).

Then from the menu (I can't remember if it is under File or Library) Export as new catalog, I usually untick the include negatives, now would be a good time to mark the images somehow (reject/colour etc) so you can identify and remove them from the current catalog when you know the new one works.

When the new catalog has been made, open it, using the folder section on the left, add your external hard drive as a folder, then drag and drop the images to move them.

Go back to your original catalog and remove the images you have moved.
