Close-up filters - to fit what lens

Hi all

I've sold my very rarely used Macro lens and now realised some shots do indeed need a close-up facility (I had an assistant use her Macro for rings, etc. detail shots)

I don't want to buy another lens just for this, extension tubes are out too, but a top Pro recommends close-up filters instead - he uses a 2x & a 4x - but didn't mention on what lens :bang:

My thoughts then... buy both for my 85mm, or buy both for my 17-55 to give a little more flexibility on 'power' by being able to zoom

Anyone any ideas based on having used such

:):):)

I would get them to fit whichever of those 2 lenses has the biggest filter diameter and get a step up ring so they can be used on the other if needed.

Thanks ecnip - I'm not concerned about their price m8, I know they are relatively cheap compared with the other options available - I am asking if you had to choose, would you stick them on an 85mm prime or a 17-55mm zoom

Nod, the filter size difference of these is a lot and I don't wish to fart about on this one ;) so again, if you've used close-up lenses... would you stick them on an 85mm prime or a 17-55mm zoom

Cheers guys :)

TBH those close up filters are a bit carp, I'd honestly suggest a Raynox DCR250, has a "squeeze" fit adaptor that fits filter threads from about 49mm upwards. The Raynox can be had for the same price of macro filters and the various filter ring adaptors you'd need otherwise. I'd use it with 85mm prime for the greatest magnification...

Not looked into these before (Raynox DCR250) but in a Google review, it suggests it's a 8x filter?

I certainly don't need anything that powerful, re OP 2x & 4x are my thoughts

Any more ideas? :)

A photographer friend of mine recommends the Canon 500D close up filter. not cheap but supposed to be very good quality and much smaller than carrying round another lens. He uses his on a 50mm standard lens

Raynox is too strong I think for what you want - it'll take you down to 1:1 with most lenses but I wouldn't rate the quality for professional work. It's +8 diopters.

+2 or +3 diopters sounds fine for wedding rings etc, but it depends on the closest focus of the main lens. Use it on the 85mm to get a bit of working distance.

Hoya make decent coated ones but they are simple, single meniscus lenses. The Canon 250D (+4 diopters) and 500D (+2 diopters) are both better quality doublets, but only available in a few sizes.

Maybe you're in luck here - 58mm £80 for the 500D http://www.amazon.co.uk/Canon-Lens-Close-up-Attachment-500D/dp/B00005QF6M

Cheers Hoppy :)

These 'detail' images never make it big in any album I design, in fact I doubt if many ever even get to 7x5", which from a 12mp camera is a huge reduction in itself. I even considered simply cropping into an image shot waaaaaaaaay too wide as a solution too, but decided that some form of close-focus was the better option

What with the light comments and the mag comments, I think I'm pretty much settled on a 2x & 4x for the 85mm :)

Cheers guys - thread CLOSED :D
