Close UP - Which Lens

Hi All,

Im looking for a lens to get some really good close-up pictures of my dogs and other things.

Would the Canon 17-40 L Series be okay for this.

What would you all choose for this job.
 
If you want close up images i would suggest a Macro lens (perhaps Canon 100mm Macro) rather than a wide angle lens such as the one you suggested.

I can't imagine you'd need a macro lens to take close up pictures of dogs. Not unless you were taking pictures of fleas!

How close were you thinking of getting?

And yes, the 17-40 L would give you very crisp pictures.

Thanks, im after good crisp close up full face shots.
 
I have a 20-35 zoom and a 50mm prime and for shots of dogs I'd be tempted to use the 50mm as dogs hardly keep still that often so the faster prime would allow me to use a faster shutter speed.

Using it as a portrait lens though I thought it would have been effective for close ups of the dog? And the original poster says close up of other things too - that's why I thought of this lens.
Sorry if I got the wrong end of the stick
I still don't think however that a wide angle lens is suitable for what was originally stated

Actually I agree with you on the focal length Matt.

My reply may have come across a little too strong which was not my intention.

On a 5D the 17-40mm is a wide angle lens and will give a relatively wide field of view. That's fine if you want pictures of your dogs splashing about at the seaside in the near to far distance but less good if you want close up pictures of them.

I'd suggest a 24/28-70mm zoom or perhaps something even longer like a 24-105 or 28-135mm. These will give you a wide to longish zoom length to play with.
 
Tony, what lenses do you currently have and if you were looking for a new onw, what sort of budget did you have in mind?

I see the 17-40 L lenses are over £500 new.

Currently have the following

Nifty 50
70-200 F4 IS
100-400 IS
 
Actually, the 17-40mm would compliment what you have very very well.

Some might say that you would be better off going for a mid range zoom but with a 17-40, 50 and a 70-200 you will be able to cover most things even if you have to take a step forward or back with the 50.
 
I picked one up the day after my last post!

I am really rather impressed with it.
 
What type of dog do you have? and how old is it?

I have used A tamron 90mm macro with my bulldogs and images were very crisp and sharp. If your dog is fast mover the AF of the tamron might be a little slow.

I would have thought you would want a good Portrait prime 50mm or 85mm.

The 17-40 would not be my choice of lens for a full face shots.

your Nifty 50 or 70-200 F4 IS should be fine, or your new to be canon 100mm macro.

a 24-70 f2.8 would be a great addtion to your lens line up

Currently a French Bulldog and 2 Pugs.

We did have Bulldogs before the Pugs.

Will buy one this year
 
Try the 50mm I'm sure it will be fine to get some nice crips shots. The canon 100mm would be nice too if you have the space to use it.

There are a few bully owners on here (owner, LOL we all know who wears the trousers)
