Hi guys and guyess's

little bit of help/advise on something im not sure of and know little about.im interested in a lens for sale in the for sale forums however the seller as stated quite open and honestly that

quote "close inspection shows what looks like some fibre inside the rear element. It looks to me like it has been cleaned internally and some cloth has snagged on the metal. However this is outside the 'viewing area' of the lens".. end quote

what im unsure about is,in use is this loose 'cloth' likely to breakdown further and in doing so affect the viewing area or 'anything else'

what you think ?? advise or thoughts please

I would walk away, as mentioned could be fungus or the cloth could disintegrate

Just as concerning is that the lens has been taken apart by what would seem an amateur if they have left debris behind

initially this was my own thought however the seller believes it is cloth and as he says snagged when cleaning the lens (previous owner to him- presumed)he is going to try and photograph the 'area' for me.if it is fungus then i know i will have a problem,if it is a loose piece of cloth im not sure if those fibres will break off and then create a future problem.?:thinking:

at this point i am presuming the lens is working perfectly,and this may well be the case,a question i will definately need a full explanation on including how long it has been owned and how often used as it appears the seller has only just noticed this 'cloth'??

What lens is it and also is it a very good price ?

I know the Canon 100-400 can suffer with the materials under the locking ring degrading and coming out - cardboard I think, but I've not heard of it going into the lens.

Also, how, if you are cleaning a lens, do you snag a piece of cloth that ends up in the lens ? Was the lens dismantled and cleaned and this is how a piece of cloth was snagged ?

Personaly I'd be leaving it, if it was as a results of dismantling and cleaning - suggests poor quality (so what else could be wrong), why has it not been removed ?

more likely to be a hair, and not remotely worth worrying about.
 
well it seems that most comments suggest that i should probably avoid this lens possibly due to the likelyhood that it may have been badly put back together.the lens is what i believed to be reasonably priced that is until the 'fibre' was known to me.there is the possibility that it may be nothing serious and as the last poster Alan suggests it may be just a piece of hair.im hoping that any picture that is shown to me can make clear what exactly it is.

i dunno, is hard to say. if the price is right and the lens still works perfect and show no image quality degrade then is alright. You can always send it back to nikon to get it service if is really bother you.
