Hey Guys.
I have been using Rear Curtain Sync on my speedlite 580, with about 1/5 sec shutter speed in the clubs.
Some of the pics are coming out wicked with loads of colour, which is great. But some of the pictures that are taken in the same lighting conditions are really dark and crappy.

Why is this?

I now it could be partly to do with lights flashing on and off, but some of them were taken with still lights in the background

Thanks

Might sound daft, but are you sure the flash has fired? I've done it a few times where the flash hadn't recycled in time to fire off another shot.

perhaps there ws just not enough ambient light to brighten then, it looks like the only light source on the subjects is the flash, where the others have the room lights too

Always take 2 shots at once, for 2 reasons:

1) Sometimes the camera will meter wrong (since the light in nightclubs is so varied and unpredictable) and give you under/overexposed shots.

2) People often blink just before the flash fires.

Just fire off 2 frames instead of one, people won't move before the 2nd flash, usually people don't move until you take the camera away from your face.

For that shot you thought was too dark - just lighten it in Photoshop or whatever app you use...takes 2 seconds. Camera probably metered it wrong - what metering mode are you using by the way?
