Hi Terry. Welcome to the forum. I don't think you will 'learn a lot' from a camera club, they are not set up to 'teach' people about photography. I am sure most are very friendly and helpful, but they are more about talks/lectures/competitions so you will learn a lot, but possibly not what you might have envisioned. Go along to a couple of meetings, see if you 'fit in' and enjoy.

Hi Carol
I was looking at the calendar of events and as you say it was talks/lectures/competitions.....I'm sure they are all knowledgeable people, but I think I need 'lessons', I think I need a 'Mentor' to help me through it all!! Or maybe a local college photography course. (you dont live in North London.....do you!! lol).
Tks for replying

Hi Terry. I'm in Sowf London! A photography course may be the way to go, see what's on in your local adult ed. Use TP as a way of gauging your progress, post some pics. Most importantly, get out and take pictures!

While a club will not have organised lessons - it will have plenty of experienced photographers who are often very helpful in terms of advice and help. I've learnt a lot through my camera club - and made some great friends too. At mine there are talks, studio nights, days out and lots of other things are arranged informally - as well as the competitions. I've found people willing to offer advice (and equipment). Through my club I've also had a photograph in an exhibition and have made contacts that have led to me doing training courses in local studios.

Camera clubs vary as to what they offer, but definitely worth checking out your local ones to see which might suit you.
