Hi any other way of telling the date on a canon lens the date is there but there seems to be a bit of plastic still there and can't tell what it says

Sounds like it's been dropped then...
 
The date code is normally 2 letters and 4 numbers.

Have a look at the above site and see if that helps you recognise / make out the code ?

What can you read then? You only need the second letter for the year, and the two numbers after that for the month.

Quick look on the phone - possibilities for me are
A, B, H, N/M, R, U/W

I've worked on the fact there are def 2 vertical lines to the 2nd letter with what appears to be a joint on the right line - as said only possibilities.

Sorry cant be more help, perhaps it looks better on a big screen ?
How long have you had it ?
You maybe able to narrow it down by finding out when the lens was first made, so can't be an earlier date code than that ...

If I had to guess, that's a W, given Hoppy's date of release for that lens. If my life depended on it, I wouldn't bet that much though - might go a fiver or so! May 2008?
