Cokin Filter Attachment Query

Bought a Cokin filter holder and Graduated ND filter yesterday from Jessops in Canary Wharf and was served by a not helpful (I think new) bod. He wasn't sure whether it fitted all lens sizes but I bought it anyway (it is for a 67mm diameter lens) Got it home to try and there doesn't seem to be any way to attach it to the lens. Am I missing a bit? I just have the actual filter and the mount it slots in to, but nothing else. :thinking:
 
You'll need an adaptor ring to fit it to the lens. The ring screws into the filter thread, then the mount slides on to that and the filter goes into the mount. Buy the appropriate width ring for your lens, the idea is that when you get a new lens you only need to buy another adapter ring to use the filters on it.

Thanks both, the clue was in his answer to my initial question 'does this fit all lens sizes?' - 'err, I don't really know..'
 
Just thought, you'll need to get the appropriate adapter for your holder. Cokin do A, P and Z sizes with different width filters so check the packaging from your holder for the code before you order anything!
 
David, did you get the Cokin P holder ie 85(ish) mm ? I ask as I'm thinking about them and I think getting the adapter ring and holder is the easy bit....its the make of filter to go in it that I'm struggling with ie do I go cheaper so I can experiment or do I go more expensive so i buy only once ?

What make of GND did you buy ?
 
When getting an adapter ring for a Cokin holder I think it's an idea to get one which is the diameter of the largest lens you're likely to use with it and to then use step up rings for your other lenses. The advantage of this is that you'll probably only need one Cokin adapter ring which you can leave permanently on the holder all the time and then use step up rings which are cheap and cheerful to attach each lens to the ring and filter holder.
 
Understood. I think my kids will be getting rotten potatoes for Christmas if I spend any more money on camera stuff this year :D
 
Damian, I got the Cokin P121M 4 Stop NDG. I am experimenting and it was about £20 - for that price I figure I can buy twice if I get on with it and want to upgrade in the future.

Thanks for all the advice and tips, I will look out for the step up rings.

I have quite a few Cokin filters and whilst some on this forum have reported quality problems and optical issues such as colour casts I've never had any problems at all, so I don't know if the reported issues are batch problems and I've just been lucky? In any event, I agree with an earlier poster that the Cokin stuff is often so cheap that it's worth a gamble as are the Kood and others that'll fit the same Cokin holder.

you need an adapter for each size of lens filter thread you have

or ^^^^ a good suggestion about the step-up rings

my 2p
if you shoot wide angle, say 18mm and wider, you may get vignetting

there is a thinner 'wide-angle' holder - which only accepts 1 filter
and the 'standard' which has slots for 3

a 'hard' grad is used on seascapes or any level landscape
a 'soft' grad is better for rolling hills, mountains etc
