Cokin Filters questions

I'm looking to buy some cokin filters to use for landscape shots etc.

I know i need to buy the filter and the filter holder then slot the filters onto the holder etc.

If i bought a set of filters for etc and the filter holder is for 77mm then i buy another 52mm filter holder. Will the filter works on both holders?
 
The Cokin system uses square filters, I forget the size... I have theeir "P" system. Obviously once you've bought a filter of a certain size it will not fit in a smaller slot, or one that's much bigger come to think of it.
 
i guess i have to picj which size i buy then.

My lenses are either 52mm and 77mm.

i think most likey i will use it on my 28-70 lens so 77mm is way to go i guess.
 
Are you buying square Cokin filters?

If you are... then yes...

You buy a holder and an adapter ring which attaches to your lens. I'd buy an adapter for your largest diameter lens (77mm or for the largest diameter lens you think you might buy :D) and then use step up rings to mate any smaller diameter lenses to the Cokin adapter.

PS. You'll also need to choose which Cokin system you buy... I bought the P but there are a few others.

You don't need to buy step up rings, it's far easier to buy adaptor rings for each lens filter size, eg 58mm ,67mm & 77mm and change adaptor rings. If you can afford it buy a holder for each lens.
 
I think I did it like that as the step up rings were cheaper than the Cokin adapters and of course step up rings can be used for other things than Cokin filter systems and are therefore multi use devices whereas the Cokin adapters have only one use.
 
yeah i was thinking about the Square filter. Just wasn't sure is the square filter that i going to buy will work on both 77mm and 52mm. If it doesn't i just buy the 77mm filter and holder and then buy a step up from 52mm to 77mm.

Yes it will.

You can use the same holder and the same filter, you will simply need adaptor rings for 77mm and 52mm. The rings are only about £5 each.

Thats good, i think buying adapter ring is pretty cheap as long as the filter and holder is ok :)

Most likely i will buy 52, 67 and 77 since those 3 filter size cover my lenses :)
