Hi,

Ok so I am looking at purchasing some gradual ND filters.

Now I see the A121S, A121F and A121 all state they're gradual ND8s.

So whats the difference between these three?

A121S
A121F
A121

 Neither the S nor the F are in the online Cokin brochure either.

Looking at this chart:

and interpreting the descriptions I would guess that the graduation in the A121 and the A121S starts halfway up the filter with the A121S having a softer edge; the A121F is graduated all the way up the filter, so there is no (or very little) 'clear' area.

Is it necessary to have a softer edge? I'd assume no if it matches to the horizon?

Also is it the top of the filter which has the softer edge or the middle where it changes? It's just the top looks darker on the 121 than the 121S on that small image.
 
Yes you use the hard edge where there is a defined horizon eg where the sea meets the sky, a soft edge where there are hills or some other uneven horizon.

The darkest part of the filter is at the top so that it goes from clear to dark grey as you go up. It's the rate at which the filter becomes darker that varies between the different filters.
 
Last few questions, I promise.

If I was to get 2 Grad ND's which two are best? ND2 & ND4? ND8 & ND2? etc.

Also is the 121M the ND4 equivalent of the standard 121?

I was using 58 & 52mm lenses but I'll be getting a 67mm soon so I will be getting the P versions rather than the A.

Unfortunately I cannot access the classifieds with not having 100 posts.
