whats the best way to use my camera out in the cold weather i.e how to prepare camera and lens for use so lens does not get condensation on it also bringing camera and lens back into house to the warmth :)

Your D300 should be fine, it's weather sealed just don't change lenses in the warm if it' is very cold as you will probably get condensation on the sensor, until its room temperature and keep the little silica gel in your bags.

when coming back inside, put your camera in a zip lock bag. bring it inside, leave it for a while to equalise. The condensation will form on the bag, rather than the camera.

Good tip

You know that those silica gel bags stop doing anything very quickly unless you regularly put them in the oven

That's a common method in Canada.

Two others are keeping the camera outside and just bringing the memory card and batteries inside sealed in a zip lock bag.

Or for more equipment to use a Pelican case and wait for the case and contents to warm up.

I find that bringing my camera in while in my camera bag seems to work just fine - as long as I don't open the bag for an hour.

So I just take memory and batteries out before I come in then zip everything back up.

Works well for me and I don;t need to faff about with ziploc bags when I just want to get in out of the cold.

Much better idea - condensation can still form on the inside of a plastic zip-loc bag giving you that Fairground-Goldfish effect with your camera...

This is what the Royal Navy photographers that we work with are taught to do in the Arctic working with the Royal Marines' Mountain and Arctic Warfare Cadre and with the Antarctic Survey units...

Silica gel packs are useless unless used in an airtight sealed case like a peli case. All they do is suck moisture from the air - if your bag's not airtight then you just have a drier living-room til they get saturated.
