Collapsible background

Doing some indoor portrait shots, waist up - struggling for plain wall space so though about getting a collapsible background.

It's for an aged 30-40 male portrait shot, wanting to look cool.

So even though I quite like the idea of this, it might not be a good pick for this time..

Alternatives, white/black?

I used to have a black velvet lastolite collapsible backdrop, shame i sold it on... I liked that.

any suggestions?
 
I do prefer a molted background (says he who's just bought a mid-grey plain paper one lol - I need it for Saturday and they don't have mottled ones that can get here in time)

Both of those are big enough for a 3/4 length in portrait orientation, but if you want space in a landscape format you'll either just be able to shoot to the waist or need a bigger one. I have a bigger one once and it was easy to use as it stood on the floor and just lent against a wall, the smaller one (which I still have) needs something to rest on most of the time, like a chair, windowsill etc. so think about how you're going to position it too

EDIT - and I'm sure you know but the white ones are only white if separately lit, the black is generally grey as some light falls on it unless you're careful. A grey one can be blown to white if needs be and made black by underexposing it - hence I only use grey ones now

I agree that that shot looks good mottled, and is my personal preference

A pal of mine who shoots LOTS of portraits has both plain & mottled, in various colours, but when he shoots plain he often also adds textures to them anyway

If pennies allow I'd get both kinds, shoot on both and see which you (the client) prefers then maybe sell on the other

As for a make - I've only ever had Lastolite ones so can't really comment on the ease of folding other makes, but its hardly genius science so I can't imagine non-Lastolites are crap at folding

I've had to import it from photospecialist in holland, hopefully in time, I've also ordered the 2 x 2.4 photosel mid grey as well - which will be here tomorrow.

Fingers crossed my wildly different flashes can work together :) I will test once I've charged the batteries..
