for some reason i have a hankering to pack my fishing reel collection away and fill the display cases with old cameras, is this likely to make me bankrupt ? are the prices of old cameras silly ? my thinking is that some of the recent film cameras are quite cheap, have seen one or two for as little as a tenner, are the older cameras expensive ? is it worth starting ? i just like to see old stuff displayed as i think it looks good and i thought cameras would be a nice change

Kodak Retina and Retina Reflex cameras are nice and affordable. They are a b****r to work on though.
They use excellent Schneider lenses and are fun to use.

They're really cheap! My favourite looking one is a Kodak Brownie Hawkeye with flash. It cost about £7 from the US and that included shipping. Polaroid SX-70's are really cool looking too!

I like to use all of my cameras though and not just leave them on a shelf to gather dust :)

Take a look at boot fairs etc.

I bought a Kodak folding camera with bellows for £15 a few years ago and I now have quite a collection.

Because people who collect cameras to speculate on their future worth push the value up so those of us who actually like to use them can't afford them!

Same with people who buy art and then lock it away so that nobody can see it.

Things are made to be used and looked at and felt and touched.

If it's broken though opr has occasional use then fine.

imho of course.

I no longer work, does that make me a collectors item?

nope.

it makes you retired, unlucky (or lucky depending on how you look at it) Ill or just plain lazy lol!

All of which are the only reasons I'd leave a camera on the shelf!

I collect old cameras, I'm up to about thirty at the moment. Every one works though and has been bought to be used.

Steve.

I find e-bay a good source of collectable cameras. Got plenty of gear from 99p and up. My favourite buys are the highly sophistacted 'point & shoot' film cameras from the 90's like the Pentax 35-200 Zooms- cost 200 pounds new ocasionaly come up for 99p!! Another line I collect is coloured Konica Pop cameras. I've got the red, black, yellow & blue models but I still looking for that elusive yellow one! Olympus XA compacts are also high quality compacts and very cheap. Pentax 110 cameras and lenses are always nice and very collectable.

I bought one of these for £4 at a carboot a few months back now for just £4!!
Still waiting to finish my film so I can see if it's lightproof!

ian, have sent you a pm

i notice monetary worth seems to be a driving factor for some people who collect cameras, or anything else for that matter, i however, am more interested in the astheic qualities of cameras, i bought the ubiquitous box brownie on sunday from a car boot sale, it cost 50p ! a bit of a clean up and it looks grand sat in the cabinet, someone at some time over the years has loved that camera and taken many a shot of loved ones or special places, i think cameras like that deserve to be rescued from the scrap heap, even saving them just to display them is better than just throwing them away. i probably will try the better ones if they look as though they are in working order, you never know i might go all nostalgic and start using film or plates !
