I am applying to do a BA in Photography in 2010 and just have a few questions in regard to my portfolio.

At the moment I'm taking a Photography project course in which we exhibit our work at the end of the process. This project requires 10 images.
I plan on using the same theme from my project for my portfolio also using the 10 exhibition images. My question is though whether it's plausible to divide a college portfolio into two different themed sections or should I just try to get an additional ten images from the same theme to cater for my portfolio.

I'm anxious that 20 images with one central theme will get boring...

Thanks in advance for help.

It's 20 years since I was at Uni and I have no idea what the panel's criteria will be for submissions - I would guess that as long as your work shows a broad range of techniques, that having a common theme won't really matter - what they'll be looking for (I'm guessing now) is that you display not only the required passion for photography and a degree of flair, but that there's room for them to teach you new things - if you're already a brilliant photographer, why go to Uni? Just go out and earn...
Apart from a few friends I still keep vaguely in touch with, I have to say that apart from the studio work and the business studies module, that none of it has really been of use to me since...
All the time we spent in darkrooms was fun - and relevant back then...but now?
As a social experience I have no regrets, however...lol
Other than that I could have been a little less callous on occasion...

When I did my BTEC I did my personal project on colour, so many options.

A lady on our course did hers on water seemed to be a subject I thought she'd be short on ideas for until she produced some stunning and loads of images on the subject - from dew on grass, to rain, to icicles to waterfalls to rivers to glasses of water.....

I think 20 photos would only be boring if the effort wasn't put into the portfolio, what is the subject you're using? Personally i'd take more photographs

I'd hazard a guess that variation in technique but withsome common themes would be a good route to take.

My BA was really good in that I did two years HND and then a third year as my BA under the same tutors who knew my working style. Still, they were still looking for students staying on for the BA to be refining their style without compromising their ability to use different techniques.

If I were you I'd present your portfolio, as you say, in two parts; the 10 'themed' images to show you can create and maintain a style of your own, and 10 images that show how you can master different aspects of photography. Only you can decide which your best shots are.

Well, my theme is far more specific than "Water".
Fundamentally, it's more of a photographic commentary on the systematic process of re-actions of a claustrophobic mind to enclosed space situations...heh.
Or basically, the theme is Claustrophobia ;)

I don' know. Taking your comments into consideration, I'm thinking it might be difficult to bang out another ten images under this motif so...

Thanks for help so far =)

i jus finished my photography a level and im not quite sure what you mean

i had 4 different themes throughout my alevel
Barriers
Links and connections
(personal study)
Discord

and my portfolio consists of the best images from each theme- your portfolio shouldnt have a theme it should just be your best work
