Color scanning B&W negatives and converting to B&W - Whats the best method?

I’m currently scanning a few black and white negatives and the scanner I’m using allows for 8bit scans in B&W or 16bit scans for colour.

If I scan in 16bit colour what is the preferred method to convert to image B&W?

I tried to delete colour channels in CS6 but it won’t allow me to save the resulting file. I have also tried opening the B&W tab and playing with the sliders to get something I like before flattening and saving the image back to Lightroom.

Select the Green channel. Change the image mode to Greyscale. It'll delete the other layers for you.

You can do that natively in Lightroom.

Yes, like Keith says. Drop it into Lightroom first and you will have lots more control.
