Not sure where to post this .... please resist the obvious inherent temptation in that statement! ;) ....... but some may well find it interesting.

At 14:20 today I had occasion to email DataColor support due to being unable to re-install software for my Spyder2, having lost the serial code - I also hadn't registered it when I originally installed the software on another PC, so I explained this in the email.

FOUR minutes later at 14:24 I received the following reply:

Dear Alan,

thank you very much for your message and your faith in Datacolor products.

Here is your new personal serial number for Spyder2express:
112xxx-137xxx-xxxxxx (my X's)

Please keep it in safe place and update your records/product registration details accordingly.
Also make sure to use the latest software version.

Please note, that our Spyder2-products are officially not supported under Windows 7.

When Windows 7 was launched, we tested our latest software for the Spyder2 and it worked fine. But due to the fact that Windows is being updated while the Spyder2 software is not, we can't support the Spyder2 on Windows 7 anymore.

Give it a try by downloading the latest software on our Download-Section:
http://support.datacolor.com/index.php?_m=downloads&_a=view

Furthermore, this 2nd generation sensor has been constructed more than 5 years ago and is therefore no longer compatible with latest display technologies, such as LED-Backlight, Wide-Gammut and screens with a glossy surface.

Spyder3 would solve all your compatibility issues.

We could look into offering it for a special price. Simply let us know if you are interested in this option and if yes, in which country you are located.

Feel free and don't hesitate to contact us again, in case you got further questions.

Thank you and best regards,

Now... THAT is what I call bl**dy good support! .... ok, they're looking to sell a product, but still! Hats off to them
.... and if any of you are looking to upgrade an older Spyder, it might be worth firing off an email ;)

That's pretty good service indeed - are you going for an upgrade? If so, let us know what they offer!

Hi Kevin,
I'm running Ubuntu Linux now due to a hard drive failure - (I had all my pics backed up on an external drive, thankfully - but a lesson learned anyway!) - and I was trying to install the Spyder in WINE.
Nikon transfer and NX2 run ok in WINE - CS4 and Lightroom have occasional strange things happening - but the Spyder isn't detected even though the software installs and seems to run ok (I'm working on it, but not holding my breath).
I asked Datacolor support and here's the reply (interestingly, on the same support ticket)

Dear Alan,

Thank you for your reply.

We're happy to hear your satisfied with our support.

Spyders are not supported on Linux OS.

We heard about open source tools working with our Spyders, such as AgryllCMS and others, but we can't offer any support on these. But you can try it pretty sure.

WINE is not good for color management, because it won't support you a real calibration.

I hope I could help in a way.

Feel free and don't hesitate to contact us again, in case you got further questions.

Thank you and best regards,

I bought a pair of 2TB external drives for image storage and backup .... so .... I'll have to try and live with Linux for a while at least, before forking out more money to go back to Windows and buying a new Spyder! :)

Had great service from them too. I didnt think mine was working right, a quick email and they just sent a replacement once I had emailed receipt to them. Excellent.
