got some money coming my way to spend on a lens . £600 in fact. so what lens for wildlife to go on my 60D. currently have a 10-18 STM for my landscapes, 85mm f/1.8 for my portrait stuff and then an old 100-300 ef lens and even older 28-105 ef lens.

did consider maybe a 100mm macro but think i would get more use from a longer lens. ideally 400mm and above.
 
Canon do the 400mm f5.6
Tamron do the 150 600mm for under a grand .......
both get good reports

....... so both used would be within your budget .............relatively new as far as the Tamron is concerned ......... I always go for a good used lens over a new one if I can find a good one

asking on here may get you one
 
was thinking along the idea of a zoom like the canon 100-400 but cant find one at £600 and budget is strictly fixed at that.
was also looking at the sigmas but there seem to be a whole bunch of em, 50-100, 150-500, 120-400 ( or something like that ) some are EX versions, some have IS ( or rather in sigmas case OS )
did look at the canon 70-300 L but 300 range just isnt enough tbh
 
maybe i can get lucky on a canon 100-400 on auction. though i guess the sigma is a cheaper option by around £200
 
thanks there seems to be several listed on there so have signed up to the site. money wont be available for 4 weeks so will keep an eye on things. as much as i like the extra reach of the sigma 150-500 i think the canon 100-400 may be a better lens ( though i know the push pull zoom can be a bit of a dust trap and its a love or hate thing ).

you will never use the shorter end, (100mm+), for wildlife, (birds), but you would use 600mm most of the time

im actually considering the tamron as the betetr option. just been looking on TDP (The Digital Picture ) and a side by side comparison of the tamron 150-600 over the canon 100-400 and sigma 150-500.

set the scale at 400mm f/8 for my camera and the tamron is significantly sharper than the other two.
even dropping down to 300 mm on the crop sample the tamron is much much clearer

ive also seen a used Tamron for sale purchased only a few months ago for £550 , as the only place i can find it new in budget is places like simply electronics... and im very distrusting of hongkomg/ china based companies ( plus the added risk surprise of being lumped with hefty import duty and tax is not a risk im willing to take.
cant find it anywhere in UK even close to £600 ( i may be able to stretch to 650 at a push ).

canon 100-400
sigma 150-500
Tamron 150-600

or a shorter lens with a 1.4x tele ( if i can find one in budget ( a 300 lens will give me 420 but much prefer the reach of a 400 with a 1.4 which will give me 560 but then a decent TC could cost half as much as the lens!

knock the warranty down to 1 year and sell it to me for £600 and i'll be happy.
i dont think ive had a lens longer than about 2 years anyway so a 5yr warranty doesnt offer much to me and i can only push a little on my 600 budget as a very last resort . i would actually prefer to go under budget to afford me a a filter to shove on the end of the lens ( may even need a bigger camera bag too though and my tripod will certainly need looking at ( a benro but rather small )..
damn this expensive hobby!!

Youve already seen how much they cost in the UK, good lenses cost money, like anything else.
 
well i have a couple of lenses i could try sell. a 28-105 EF lens and a 100-300 EF lens. both optically excellent and very clean..that should help bump the funds up if i can get rid of them i guess
