I am running an Acer Tower (can’t remember the model at the moment but new one purchased this April) on XP-SP3 with AVG 2011 and Comodo Personal Firewall latest version/

I’ve always run this combination and apart from when I forgot to do a major upgrade in AVG everything has always been fine…….. until the latest Comodo upgrade !
After a lot of googling and reading the comodo forum there seems to be a common intermittent fault on the XP-SP3/AVG2011/Comodo combination - on shutting down PC get the message that one of the Comodo files won’t end, couple of files are mentioned on alternate shut downs - so basically I want to uninstall Comodo, at the moment there doesn’t seem to be a fix in the pipeline for this issue so I’d rather get rid for now.

Apart from debating which firewall to install instead of Comodo I want to make sure that Comodo completely uninstalls and I believe there are some programmes around that help with this? I’ve heard of Revo Uninstaller but wondered if anyone had any other recommendations. Comodo does have its own programme but I’ve heard of issues with that as well!

Also – re alternative firewall, my IT Manager at work has said that he runs all his home PCS on XP still and uses the Windows XP firewall and never had any problem. I did this originally and to be honest never had any problem either so am seriously considering do that………..again any comments/advice?
I am not particularly technical so easy advice please :D

I just used the ADD / REMOVE PROGRAMS in the CONTROL PANEL and Comodo was gone.

I too just use the Windows Firewall, it is much better than it was a few years ago.

what router do you recommend and how is it fitted (probably a very numpty question !)

How do you connect to the internet? You may already have a router.

The router goes between you and your internet connection. Typically, for ADSL, you'll use a combined ADSL modem/router. If you are on a cable service, typically, you'll have an ethernet port out of the back of the cable modem (thing that connects to the cable). In that case, you'll just need a router. If you've a wireless connection, you're probably connected through a router as it is.

Ahh - told you it was a numpty question! Yes I'm on cable and am thinking of going wireless for when I eventually get a new laptop, so maybe I should bring that plan further forward.
So can I install router now i.e in between the cable modem and the PC, or would be easier to just go wireless now?
 
Assuming it's virgin, didn't they supply a wireless router with the package?

If not, for cable, I'd get a wireless N router (new laptop will most probably be N enabled). You can go cheap: http://www.ebuyer.com/product/222259

Lots of choice - basically, you have an ethernet cable coming out of your modem. That goes to the "up" port of the router and the PC then connects to one of the ports on the router.

You may need to spend a little time reworking your network settings.

True enough for Vista and Windows 7 but not for XP. The XP firewall is badly flawed - it only filters inbound packets, has no application awareness and XP doesn't support the concept of LUAs. Outbound filtering can help detect and stop the proliferation of malware and its effects and should really be a part of the overall security strategy.

Comodo used to be a good firewall (I haven't used it in a while) and didn't normally have that much of a resource footprint. It's a pity that it's got problems.

If you want to keep using a software firewall (always a good idea IMO) then Online Armor gets good reviews and has a free version. :)

I've had Virgin for donkey's years, before wireless was easily available so no wireless option at the time but I keep meaning to contact them about it.

Brilliant advice from you all! Thanks guys, will look into this and then no doubt be asking about network settings:D

ms have purchased comodo now from what i believe and ISA server is effectively that, i hear the interface is pretty much identical?

as for xp firewalling, yeah okay outbound filtering was a little poorly thought out but if youre running decent enough AV and malware then you should be fine.

Neil - what Malware do you recommend? I'm not using any at the moment so maybe this is something else I should be looking into......its bloomin endless all this protection just to stop some little **** doing nasty things to my PC !
 
Ah right. I hope it doesn't go the same way as Sygate when Symantec bought them out.

Outbound filtering wasn't so much badly though out as forgotten entirely on XP :p

I always recommend a third party software firewall for XP though as it will often catch malware activity - not all users are switched on to the risks even with AV and and AM. I'm a great believer in layered security being good security :D

It's annoying but necessary, unfortunately.

Fortunately it's also free :)
 
McAfee have been doing the same.

Not always a good thing for the consumer, IMO.

Actually MS Security Essential was another one I was looking at, being a numpty I thought it was something thrown in with Windows 7 then saw someone saying it was running on XP but I had seen a couple of reviews saying it didn't run on XP so well............. soooo many decisions !

Would you recommend Avast and Avira Antivir over AVG ?

Yep, it's a shame about AVG but Neil is spot on. It misses detections and its resource footprint has increased somewhat.
 
That's this evening's task sorted out then, - ditching AVG and comodo and installing Avast and Malawarebytes

Hi - its me again!

I've removed Comodo and I think it's gone other than the fact that when I searched the registry I did find a folder called Comodo Antivirus with a key in it - is it okay to just delete that folder ?

I also seem to have a system date/time issue. I had a problem when booting up that said the CMOS setting was incorrect? I found out that my "page up key" was jammed down for some reason and this appears to have been causing the problem (don't know why) as now that I've released it everything is booting okay. Just a system time issue that causes AVG to tell me there is a system time issue (sorry that's a bit rambling) anyone know how I correct that? Do I have to go into the setup when I boot and do it from there?

Oh how I hate this kind of thing!

Just get your PC up and running then put your clock to the right time and date by double clicking it.

If it happens again you need a new battery in your motherboard.

I have been OK for a year or two now since moving back to Windows Firewall from Comodo.

I tried that Online Armor yesterday and not at all impressed!

At the end of the installation, my computer shut itself down then went into an endless run of startups.

Might have been my XP64 system but a properly written software wouldn't have let it install in the first place!
 
Maybe you should have read the system requirements first.

System Requirements

Online Armor currently runs on Windows XP SP3 (32bit), Vista SP2 (32bit) and 7 (32bit & 64bit).

Note: Product does not currently support the following operating systems:
Windows XP 64, Windows Vista 64, Windows 98/Me

Read the first bit but not the Note bit....

....are you disagreeing with "but a properly written software wouldn't have let it install in the first place" then?

If you read the first bit then you should have seen this part:

Online Armor currently runs on Windows XP SP3 (32bit)

It's properly written. It's up to you to read the specs before you download and install it.

If you bought a piece of software that was only written for a 32 bit OS because you failed to check properly would you expect a refund? :p
 
True enough but a lot of 32 stuff does run on XP64 and most stuff that doesn't comes up with a wee notice saying it doesn't work on XP64 BEFORE it can install.
 
Just to say thanks for all the advice guys! Everything now seems to be running normally, no annoying messages on close down, Comodo out and won't be reinstalling that in a hurry! The clock issue seems to have sorted itself out after a couple of reboots and AVG is happy that the system clock is okay - it was getting a little confused :lol:. Still running AVg at the moment but will switch to Avast soon and purchase a router..... once payday comes around:D
