Right following on from this thread http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=240138

I'm going to purchase a wee compact camera to start off with to cure the bordem that sometimes affects me. I will be upgrading to a SLR as stated in the previous thread when i feel the need too, hopefully the near future but for now im after a pretty decent compact with a few functions and on a budget.

Now i've been looking for the past few days and finally have a shortlist

Features i want apart from the basics are external memory additions like a SD card port.
Proper battery rather than AA's etc
Relatively light weight and good looking
Decent zoom
Decent lighting/flash for nighttime photo's.

Do we have any compact camera pro's on here?

sorry can't help

might help if you list the cameras too rather than just links

i too was thinking of getting something similar, but then i thought spend a little extra and get a better compact

now my criteria has changed, as i want a robust one and looked at starting entry ones now looking in the middle-top end ones i.e. sony tx5.

to be fair, all are probably much a likeness, go play with them instore. johnlewis have loads out to play

you'll probably decide on how it looks, feel in hand, menu's etc
but can't go wrong with nikon, canon etc.
