My daughters ageing Powershot A460 has just about given up the ghost and she's asked for a new camera for Christmas

She's specified the Sony with smile recognition which at just over £100 seems good money for a superseded model.

Saw this Panasonic on Argos tv advert earlier and wondered if anyone had any experience of either and could comment on what they are like

I think the good folk on this forum are either too busy lusting after all the goodness of DSLR stuff and don't have the time to research sub £100 compacts or they view them as a much of muchness and couldn't possibly be any good at that price range (not necessarily true but I'm too busy lusting to care to find out ). It would be highly unlikely that a user has both of these to be able to give an unbiased opinion and for the record I have neither of them. I would suggest you read the user reviews on both those sites to get an idea of what the people who bought them think. Alternatively pop over to dpreview and do a side by side comparison and draw your own conclusions. As with all user reviews be aware of those who justify their purchases with "great camera, 10/10" but try and find those who can point to real overview of what they are like in reality.
