Compact DSLR

Hi everyone

Can anyone reccomend a compact slr? I had been looking at the nikon j1 but when I have got my hands on it it seems like a glorified compact, albeit a fantastic compact i think it may be limiting as I would like maybe to progress with my pics

I have a 4 year old and the main purpose of getting my own slr is to record her growing up. The Nikon would be perfect as the speed is amazing but was kinda hoping for a bit more?

Any recommendations?

The Nikon 1 isn't a DSLR.

What is it you want it to do that the Nikon 1 can't?
