I have done a search but couldnt really find a definative answer to this one..

scandisk cards have, for example, 30mb/s written on them wheras transcend have something like 133x or 400x.

how do these figures relate to one another?

Also, looking to get a 16Gb card for my 5d2 as I only have a 4GB at the moment
Is it worth paying double for a 400x card (about £40 for the transcend) when i can pick a 133x one up for £20.

i mainly shoot portraits so speed isnt really too much of an issue, so long as a 133x isnt a load of rubbish!

I did read a review in a mag re all these numers etc and yes they are related - some use 30mb/s, others use 133x etc. Will see if I can find it.

The main thing I remember is the class speed, I know CF and SD cards differ, but in a CF group, all the class speed should equate to the same.

Whether it's worth buying a faster card - makes a difference for writing to the card - so you dn't buffer, but can also make a difference transferring to the PC, but this depends on all other factors of equipment as well.

You say you have a 4GB card, are you happy with the writing and transfer rate, have you had any buffer problems or wishing it would transfer quicker, what speed is the card you are currently using. I suppose, if you have had no issues at all, then I would probably go for at least the same spec if not slightly faster for your new card and save some money.
 
I've been happy using Sandisk 30mbs 4 and 8 gig cards in my 5d2 for ages without a problem. Last night I used a 16gig 90mbs Sandisk card and it was noticeably quicker to clear the buffer.

Not sure there's much benefit for posed shots, but quick fire and video is an improvement.
