compact for £500

hi everyone, my friend wants to spend up to £500 for a decent compact dosen't mind going a bit over if required. any suggestions?
 
I'd be seriously tempted to look at the Oly EPL2 or the Sony NEX3 for that sort of money!
 
What does your friend want the camera for? Social photography, or something a bit more specialised?

family, holiday snaps and maybe something for his work he is an architect so maybe something with a wide angle.
