Compact for macro?

I've been asked for some advice by a friend but I don't know much about compact or bridge cameras really.

She's after a compact camera which is good for macro work. She currently has a Canon G11 and is ideally after something similar but which does proper macro.

Is there such a thing or is she better off transitioning to a low-end DSLR with a proper macro lens?
 
I don't know that there is anything that does 1:1 out of the box but she could try adding a Raynox to the G11?
 
I think as far as compacts go the G11 is relatively good for macro. The minimum focusing distance is 1cm at widest setting, although I've read there's some distortion when used like that.

It does seem like she should look at something like the Raynox mentioned above or a dslr/macro lens combo. Then after a while she can start looking at / asking about teleconverters, reversing rings, extension tubes and ringflashes. ;)
 
Thanks for the advice. I'd not considered the Raynox approach - does anyone know exactly what adapters I'd need with a Raynox 250 to fit a G11? It's a bit confusing.
 
Get in touch with these guys (on facebook) - they do a fair bit of macro and I met up with them once and remember them telling me they use a compact and am always amazed with the results.
