Compact help....

I have just sold my 20d and various bits and pieces in favour of a higher end compact. I was adamant it would be the Canon G12 as my budget was ok for that, but now I see Kerso is selling the G12 at a very good price and also the Sony Nex 5 kits (16mm or 18-55mm) now I'm torn as I had discounted the Nex due to price. Can someone more knowledgable than me point me in either direction? They are all within budget although the 18-55mm is at the top end of it!

Primary uses will be photographing my new daughter (2 weeks old-bless! :love:) and the occasional landscape-view kind of stuff.

What are the pros and cons of the two please? I understand the Canon has the greater focal range, but I do love my Bokeh! lol

Any help would be rewarded with a photo of my daughter with the offending camera :nuts:

Since getting my first micro four thirds camera I've reassessed what's possible from a small(ish) camera. I don't think that there's any way that a top end compact (and that's all the G12 is) can compare with the image quality from a Panasonic or Olympus MFT or Sony Nex. You may lose some of the zoom range that you'd get with a pimped up compact like the G12 or LX5 but you gain image quality and possibly speed of operation too.

IMVHO you should take a close look as the mirrorless offerings from Panasonic, Olympus, Sony etc.

Wibble! Having never used a four thirds camera, your saying the image quality is that much better than the Panasonic? At the end of the day, that's all we're striving for, right?
 
I have an LX5, GF1 and G1 and the two micro four thirds give much better IQ than the LX5 and as you ramp up the ISO the difference becomes even more obvious.

The LX5 takes nice pictures and it has a good zoom range but I think that top end compacts are getting squeezed by MFT.

I could post similar shots from each but at web sizes I don't know if it'd proove too much.
 
How about the video format? I know my old Sony used AVCHD which my Mac struggled with..

It's something I've never done but if you want to delve deep into your wallet I've read that the Panasonic GH2 is pretty much the best SLR type camera for video... but it's getting away from the more compact dimentions.

Over my budget! Just as well. The reason I ask about video is if it's there why not utilise it...

My heart is definitely saying Sony but my head is saying Canon! :suspect:
