My wife has asked me for a compact digital camera for her birthday, (which has pleased me no end as I might be able to get out and do more photography myself).

But she wants a simple to operate, "handbag" style compact, with one of the big (in comparison to the size of the camera) displays on the back.

But, as we all know, the market is flooded with that type of camera (Canon or Nikon may very well not make the leading compacts) and would very much welcome some advice and suggestions.

Budget, £100 to £200, but I'll go up if the reasons are compelling.

I would look at the Panasonic TZ25 (approx £170 with cashback from Panasonic) or for a little more the Sony HX20V (approx. £240 with cashback from Sony).

They are also good at taking HD videos.
 
I'll second the HX20V, it's a direct succesor of the HX9V and that was very popular as a small everyday compact as well. The £40 cashback expires tomorrow, I think Amzon still have the best price - it's where I bought mine.

I'd recommend the Canon SX220 or the Panasonic Lumix TZ25.

The Canon SX and Lumix TZ series are perfect, just see which model is the right price from where you want to buy it.

The Canon S95 is amazing value at £199 at Amazon. Better picture quality than the two I said but much less zoom and more manual control that may be confusing if she's not into it too much.

My wife has the Canon 220HS (not the SX version) and she loves it. Amazingly compact, good build, very basic controls but decent enough image quality.
 
I have a Canon 220HS and I think it's brilliant. I just wish more of these things offered RAW files as a option because once you've used RAW files and Lightroom everything else does seem like a compromise.

Direct successor to the hx10v ;)

It is a great camera though, I have it and can say anyone would be satisfied, amateur or enthusiast!
 
Thanks all for replying, definitely food for thought.

Quite fancy the HX20V, although may be a bit over my budget, and as it's for my wife she's unlikely to use all of it's functionality.

I'm very happy with my Lumix LX5 :clap:
Great lens and full auto functionality and just as good in manual.

Wow, 36 x zoom! looks like a cracker for £185 (Amazon).

Looks to be a bit bulky for a "handbag" compact from internet piccies, but worth a look at in the flesh.

I tried the Sony but the IQ just didn't quite cut it. Great Zoom though! I ended up getting a s100 on the cheap which I love!
 
We had a look at the sp-81ouz Walter, she did think it was a bulky for what she wants, but thanks anyway Walter.

Coming round to the Canon IXUS 240, she liked the size and the WiFi function, bit over my budget, but I'm a big softie at heart :love:.

Not purchased yet, she is patient and wants to be sure it's the right one.
