Compact - that zooms by mm?

Random question, but does anybody know of a company/poin and shoot camera on the market which you can zoom by MM, i.e you can zoom to 35mm, 50mm, and such, rather than just 'zoom x1.2'.

I have no idea about compacts as I always use SLR's but this is for a work issue, as we need photos taken exactly at 50mm (don't ask, long story).
 
Those Fuji things have manual zoom with mm but I guess they're a little more than you were thinking of?

Why not buy any old compact, find out what multiplier matches 50mm on your DSLR and make a note?

If you get a compact with a "24mm" wide, wouldn't 2x be about right?
 
Aye, the x10 has markings on the manual zoom that tell you what the 35mm format equivalent is. Very handy IMHO!
 
The Panasonic LX5 that I had did this, so you could go straight from 24mm (equivalent) to 35mm, 50mm etc. Useful feature.
 
I've always wondered why compacts use multipliers rather than mm, why is that?
 
maybe because a lot of compact users don't equate to 35mm film equivalent and just want to know how much more magnification they are applying. It probably doesn't even matter to most people as they just zoom until they get the result they want.
 
yeah easier for a 'non-camera' type person to deal with 1.5x rather than xxMM. they have no idea about mm and such.

Something about us taking a photo from a spot at 50mm, then the client goes and takes the same photo but with other pics/kit to make a 3D model of it. I'm asking what crop they use but I'm sure it's 1.6 by the sounds of it.
 
Do they want a photo taken at 50mm or one taken at a 35mm equivalent of 50mm? The only reason I ask is that I imagine the lenses on most compact cameras don't actually go as far as 50mm.
 
Canon S100 can do this using the front dial. It can go 24-35-50-85 and 112mm which is great for people who want to shoot at a given focal length the same as FF.

If this is related to planning applications (as per another recent thread) then the specifications that were given meant that only a full-frame camera with a 50mm lens was acceptable. You need to give more information on the reasons why it has to be 50mm and why you think a compact is suitable.
 
The problem you will have is 35mm equivalent on a compact or aps-c camera of 50mm is not the same image as 50mm full frame as the focal length is different. So if you use a Nikon D800 at 50mm and they use a 2x crop cam at 25mm they will produce different images. (this only matters if it needs to be accurate)

But, as I understand it, my Canon S95 at 28mm is the same as a FF 28mm or a DX 18mm(ish).

No.. it's the same as the middle bit of the image from a full-frame at 28mm (with a lot of the edges cropped off).
