Not for me for my mother-in-law.

I'll be honest I've lost touch with compacts so I'm not really up on the latest models.

Her criteria is simple, smallish, big zoom with decent image quality. It will be used in manual mode pretty much exclusively.

Budget is up to £250.

Canon s100 at £208 is pretty good value on digitalrev, ordered one myself.
 
Read about that in another thread. Does look a good camera for the money.
Although they could probably do with a longer zoom as they plan on going on safari next year.
 
For outdoor work I love my Panasonic Lumix TZ20. Takes great zoom shots as I recently discovered in a zoo in Brazil.
 
My brother got himself a Panasonic Lumix TZ25 and the zoom on it is good. He has some good shots taken with it.
 
have had a few from fujifilm.co.uk recon cameras, boxed with warranty been great so far

The canon sx230 got cracking reviews. Thanks fir all the suggestions. Will check them out.

For images I found it quite bad actually.

Gave it to my girlfriend and for many reasons it was good ridence!
 
First question is what is your MIL going to do with it? £250 buys a lot features on a compact these days, but is your MIL going to take advantage of them?

I was in a similar situation earlier this year. My mum desperately needed a new camera as she had an ancient 4MP Samsung with terrible picture quality and awful focusing. I'd was considering several compacts in the £250-300 range when it occurred to me that she was never going to move that dial out of automatic.

In the end I bought her a Panasonic for around 70 quid - I already had an older version and the Intelligent Auto is uncanny in detecting what you want to do with it, also the image quality is more than acceptable for snapshots and prints up to A4.

Anyway, I gave her a quick 101 on the camera, explained the more useful functions and off she went, and loved it.

For a snapshot camera I'd recommend anything in the lower end of the Panasonic range, and spending more is likely to be waste of money. However, it really comes down to what your MIL is going to do with it.

Further into that thread I did say that "bad" was a bit of a strong word.

It's everything the op asked for. IQ is decent - not amazing.

It's the only camera I've had where images haven't been good enough to be published online - but that's my standards and I don't know what others think of it.

If you're looking for an OK piece of kit that does a lot but don't mind compromising on IQ then this is the one. It can't compete with compacts that have better lenses equipped.

I found that dropping to 10mp improved the IQ significantly from 18mp.

Would I get it again? No. Does that mean it isn't what the op is looking for? Hmmmm...
