Comparing Lenses

I have the unique opportunity this weekend to compare side by side the Sigma 17-70 OS Macro 2.8-4.0 and the Tamron 17-50 2.8 VC lenses on my Canon 40D.

I have bought both...and I intend to return the one I like least.

Just asking for advice as to how to test the lenses to pick which is the winner

My plan was to do a photo at each aperture from 2.8 upwards to F8, and at each of the following focal lengths: 17mm, 24mm, 28mm, 35mm, 50mm, 70mm (sigma)

So roughly 60 pictures per lens

Then import them to Lightroom and do 100% crops of each to find which is sharper, has better colours etc

Is this the correct test procedure?

I would be more inclined to go out and take some photos of stuff you like shooting with both lenses, than spend the weekend taking pictures of bits of paper.

You should still be able to tell which is better at the end of it. And you'll find out what they're like to use for your chosen subject.

That's what I'd do anyway

Edit: sorry - somehow thought you would be using charts, but perhaps not. Anyway, your test sounds very thorough, I guess I'm saying I'd be less scientific! That's a lot of pictures to sift through

I'm sorry for my ignorance-Ness. But does shops allows that? I mean u bought something and return it back in a week time. Will u get full refunds on that?

Yep I checked it with them and they were 100% happy with it, and said a lot of customers do it!

Well the Tamron will be soft and the Sigma won't have constant f/2.8 but will have more reach and macro benefit. Depends what you shoot and value most. Have you considered the Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 EX DC HSM OS?
