I'll keep this as short as possible.

So I've done two jobs for a studio in town. The first time I used a 1000D and SD cards. Gave him the card, he couldn't get the photos off and it corrupted.

OK, so I used a recovery program and put it down to "he uses CF, maybe his reader doesn't work for SD so good".

So last night, I do another job with my 5D2. He gave me a Sandisk CF card that I formatted in my camera, and it gave "Error 02" within 5 shots. So in goes my own card, no problems all night.

And now he can't read this one either and has managed to wipe it. How can this be?!

So I am currently recovering AGAIN and my computer is pulling off a full 16gb of photos. I hope.

He claims it doesn't happen with other photographers. I have NEVER had any problems. I have read my CF cards on other windows computers and macs and never had a single issue. Who is to blame?

If you used a recovery program on your system then the card/pics was currupt... the only way to know if your camera are his reader is corrupting them is to take your laptop along and read into your system before his and see if they come out OK

As this then happened wiht your CF card as well then it points to your camera.. but am guessing it works OK for you so that points otherwise..


The only way to know is go with your system... download to your laptop then hand him the card and see what happens. process of illimination :)
 
I would do that but unfortunately I don't have a laptop..... Just a desktop.

I'm quite technologically minded and cannot for the life of me work out what the problem is.

The only two things in common are his computers/readers and my operating system. Everything else has changed.
 
Not sure if it is related, but one of my CF cards had a brain fart recently.

Got back from a wedding and started backing up my cards, and found one of them wouldn't be recognized by my computer/card ready. Was a bit of a brown pants moment at first, but I knew I could view the contents in the camera, so put it back in and used the camera as the card ready and got the images off.

The card has since been formatted and seems to be working fine, though I am keeping a close eye on it.

Have you formatted your card or just deleted the contents?
 
I don't know exactly what he did, but when I got my card back from him it was empty. No files, no folders. Either one of his computers or his camera that he tried it in decided to "quick format" it I suspect. His card that I borrowed showed it had folders and files like it should but the folder that actually contained the images wouldn't open.

I did manage to recover all the files thankfully. He was pleased.

I don't know how much use his cards get, I was surprised to see 128mb cards lying around....
 
Perhaps he has his system set so that it deletes the files automatically after downloading, the fact that its failing to download them onto his system might not stop it completing the action and deleting them.

It could also be that it is downloading them but to a different location/folder on his computer.
 
That's a good point Ian. I hadn't thought of that. I suspect that isn't the case though because it wasn't just that the pictures had gone, all folders had gone too.

I made the mistake of having Magic Lantern on there (he saw the extra files) and so he is blaming that. So the files were there when he first plugged it in.
