Complete kit reorganisation

I have way too much kit that I just don't use so would like to slim the whole thing down. I hardly get to shoot wildlife any more and mostly take family photos etc.

I am therefore thinking of getting rid of my 2 lots of kit (7D and all canon kit and my leica M9, M6 and lenses) and downsizing to one of the smaller FF DSLR options (either the 6D or D600). I would like one standard zoom (24-105 canon or 24-85 nikon I think) one telephoto zoom (would keep 70-200 f4L for canono or get nikon equivalent) a couple of primes (50 and 85) and a lens so that I could still keep up with some bird photography (300 f4 with TC springs to mind).

So, what and why? I would appreciate user advice on this, espeically the scary thought of going nikon! ;)

(I would also like to keep a film SLR- probably an EOS 30 or F100...)
 
It's a big change going to Nikon from Canon. You would have to start from scratch, is it worth it?
Would you be happy with Nikon ergonomics? Personally, I've never got on with Canon- I much prefer Nikon. They just 'work' for me.
It may be the same in reverse for you. :)

I will spend some time this weekend (hopefully) fondling a nikon (if SirSR allows me to) and get an idea. I can only think that would be a short term problem though, overcome by use and familiarity.

Personally I'd still keep the leica m9...

Enjoy the Nikon - see how you get on with it... :)
If you like the birding, and if you get a nikon, borrow/hire the 50-500 sigma see whether it suits your needs... I always wanted one, but I have the 300 f4.5 tair m42 to use for now :)

It sits in a bag not really being used and my eyesight is not so great for manual focussing, so I suspect whilst it has been fun to use the M9, it is best I go AF! ;)

I think you might be right about hiring though, I could get a great lens a couple of times a year for the price of a 300mm f4.

Jim, very happy to let you fondle the D800/d90 this weekend. Ive got the tamron 28-75 f2.8, 70-200 f2.8, Nikon 50 f1.8, samyang 85 f1.4 and an older 105 f2.8 macro. So pick and play!!

Also some lencarta lights which I'm sure you're familiar with anyway!!

You already have a nice selection of canon lenses though, so do the full frame canons not tickle your fancy?

And a little piece of me is weeping a bit about your leicas!!

Lo Shaheed. Am also considering the 6D. Looks like a nice camera but as I am considering a full clear out I may as well look at all the options! As for the canon lenses, I do have some nice ones but the 17-55 would have to go and I would need a new standard zoom. I am also concerned that the 6D won't be up to the intermittent wildlife use it would need to have. The D600 sounds like it has better AF.

I will be bringing the M9 with me this weekend. I will be sad to see it go but it is too much money just sat there fore intermittent use! ;)
 
Have you mentioned the Leica to T? I suspect he might have a passing interest :-)

I looked at the d600 but there was a deal on at the time which meant the d800 was only a few hundred more. Better af but more pixels. I really like the d800 but have often said that if I was starting out from scratch now, then the 5d3 would be very high on my list. No regrets over the d800 though. The two most used lenses are my 70-200 f2.8 and te tamron 28-75.

It's definitely worth thinking about switching but can't help thinking you've got some decent lenses/flash already for canon! See what you think when you handle the d800!!

I have mentioned it to T before and he was interested. He is down in London this weekend though!

I want to get the smallest camera possible to avoid having huge amounts of kit, so am looking at the 6D and D600 mainly- both are a lot smaller and lighter than their bigger brothers! You are right about flashes etc, 6D would make a lot of sense with the 24-105 f4 or 24-70 f4 on the front.
 
As a totally left field suggestion, a couple of friends have the OM-D and are very impressed with it. Obviously not the same as FF but seems one to consider! Especially given its size!

Is the 6d much smaller than the 5d3? Not sure how the d600 compares size/weight wise to the d800. Although I did use my d90 the other day and it felt feather light in comparison!!

The 6D and the D600 are about 800g and 900g respectively.

D800 is about 1000g.

HAve used the F-i-L's OM-D and I like them but want to still shoot film and keep the FF look in digital that I am used to from the M9. As for size, the 6D is about the same as my 7D, which is deffo smaller and lighter than the 5D3. Perhaps I need to do some advanced shop fondling...
 
I got rid of the M9 for a D800 and don't regret it. I'd look at a D800 or D600 the 24-120 and the new 80-400 VR plus a 50 1.4 and 85 1.8
 
How about.....

Fuji x100s for every-day shots, it's light and small. Keep your Canon gear for the odd wildlife occasions.
 
I done a big swap around,to much gear but the big thing was weight.

So i got rid of one of my Nikon D3,plus a couple of lens that i just did not use much.
So kept one FF Nikon D700,and spent the money on the Fuji stuff XE-1 & X1 pro,really pleased with the Fuji so far,couple of things i miss,battery life instant start up.
But in the end no regret so far,still got some more sorting out to do but will get their in the end :)

I have fiddled with the Fuji stuff and just didn't like it. Personal preference I think. The om-d is a much better camera in my opinion. Increasingly feels like I need to go to a bricks and mortar shop and do some fondling.

I didn't like them at 1st but more i try them the more i like them,the other thing was as this was now going to my main camera i looked for the best p/q i could get for my money,and the fuji seem to fit my bill :)

But i would say its not if you like long zoom/lens their better camera out their

So, to round it off. 5DIII, oh my goodness- it kicks the 7d all over town. Image quality at lower ISO levels is almost as good as the M9 (the M9 is a little sharper as it has no AA filter and the sensor tech differences give it an edge too) but the 5DIII goes up to 11 on the ISO knob! The ISO and the IS in the 24-105 made shooting with a zoom in the British museum a breeze today!

Sad to see the Leica go, but not the 7d. Long live the 5DIII!
