composition

worth buying The Photographers Eye. Covers all aspects of composition with good text and example images to prove the point.
Understand that is not on the web but sometimes web is not best

I second that recommendation. It's a bit of a heavy read (I found, anyway) but in small doses, is very good. :)

Go on to Google and type in the following names in image search:

Canaletto
Van Dyck
Gainsborough
Constable
Turner
Lowry
Renoir
Gauguin
Lautrec

then spend at least 10-15 minutes studying each artist.

All of them have varying styles and subject preferences, yet all show great use of composition. Use your eyes and work out how and why the pictures were constructed as they are.

That'll teach you as much if not more than a book!

I agree. The Photographers Eye is a very good book, but it is also very heavy. It might be a bit much for a beginner - I certainly struggle with it at times!

Critiquing other peoples shots is one of the best ways.

Thinking about their composition, then actually writing your suggestions takes a great deal of consideration. You might start with a brief idea, then as you learn what really works and what doesn't you expanded ideas can be tested in the critique you give... doesn't matter if your wrong or right, its still your application of thought that's continuously being improved...and its that very same thought process that could make your compositions great.

When I critique, my 'nice shot' comments are totally sincere, but the crit that follows is more for my own learning than the OPs.
