compressing file sizes

The way I do it is to firstly reduce the actual size of the picture - usually to 600 pixels x 400 pixels (another forum I post on has 600 pixels as the longest side and I'm too lazy to do more than one conversion!). Then I Save As (in Photoshop Elements) JPEG and adjust the quality slider until I get down to the required file size (100kB for the other forum). I'm afraid this does nothing for the quality but there again, neither does looking at an image on a screen!

The images I post are hosted on FlickR and I upload the images so the large size is the one I've resized myself - the smaller images are sometimes larger files than the large image.

to upload pics you have to comply with the compression rules
ever try to send a 5Mp shot on hotmail....??
i think we all may get this problem....i certainly do but my originals are only 4Mb sourced
my method is to pp at full size..unsharp mask to my favourite settings
resize and save for web at 200 and then resharpen...save again with suffix A
open both and check out the diff's...the resharpened one should be a bit better but nowhere as good as an original
i dont do raw so i can comment on that regime..
viewing online isnt rocket science...the technology is really for commercial reproductions..since your screen viewing dpi is your 'print'....have i got that right?
i am not a photographer-photographer just a snapper so i am pleased to get to show some snaps at any opportunity..best of luck
like now...:D

this is rubbish compared to the orginal...viewed on my laptop even....its 46% compressed from the 800x800 downsized shot to get 200Kb for internet
:(
