For some reason Norton ghost 2003 and v.10 do not seem to work on a friends PC. Its a dell and there is a lot of crap on there so maybe its conflicting.

Are there any other options for main hard disk back up.

They need something that if the main disk fails then the second one can be used instead.
 
You could use a RAID 1 setup.

Two identical disks are used to mirror each other. If one dies the other takes over instantly.

Or something like hwww.acronis.co.uk to make a copy of the OS installation you can restore onto a new disk if the original fails.
 
RAID isn't a proper backup solution.

If you delete something by accident, it'll get deleted from the other drive in the array as well and your file is gone forever. There are horror stories about sites which used to use this technique and are now completely offline after a kernel bug wiped a drive which then of course wiped the other drives. RAID has its uses but reliable backup isn't one of them. Worse, if your computer blows up, all drives in the array are probably useless.

I use a Mac at home so can't offer any Windows based solutions, I'm afraid. For Mac, I use Carbon Copy Cloner to clone my main drive in it's entirety. I can boot from this backup drive just as if it was my main. I also have another backup drive which doesn't stay in the computer and I do the same backup to this drive but less often and keep it hidden in my bedroom.

Ideally, you want to keep an off-site backup in a friend or family members house as well. If (heaven forbid) your house burns down and all your backup drives are in your office, all your backups are gone as well. An off-site backup will mean your data is protected from a fire or theft in your house. This is something I'm looking to start doing soon.

The main part of any backup is testing. You might say you backup all your data, but have you ever tested restoring from backup? Remove your main drive and imagine it's completely shot to hell and unusable. Then try restoring from your backups. If you can't restore, your backup process is useless.

Look at finding a program which will allow you to completely clone a hard drive. Do frequent backups, and test regularly as well. If you have to pay for software, then pay. Don't be cheap! What price would you put on tens of thousands of your photos which you can never get again?

Sorry I just realised you were probably asking for such a piece of cloning software and I went completely off track with a response all about general backup strategies!

The URL Orange Peel gave seems to have such a cloning program available (True Image). Not free but not expensive, either.

What OS are they using. As far as I am aware Ghost 10 is not Vista compatible. This may be the problem

no please dont as it wont protect against RAID controller failures.

something like synctoy or alway sync should do you..

I don't think Symantec still support Ghost 10 as it's getting old now, I think they're on Ghost 14?

What about Save & Restore?

One good thing about Symantec backup products, when you need them they work perfectly!
 
For off site storage i can recommend Carbonite Mac ot Windows..

No mater how saafe you make you system RAID1 or even RAID5 with VSS setup it still will not help with theft or Fire/Water Damage...

Get it backed up off site...

Acronis True Image is a good tool to create backups on external drives, it even helps you create a boot disk to make it all work again once you swap the failed hard drive.

I on the other hand have a MAC with timemachine running on an external drive, which allows me to go back to pretty much any moment in time for the last 6 months to pull out a file and i have carbonite installed for off site storage.
 
I offered two options. One to protect against disk failure and one as a backup of the original disk.

Both options are suited to the OP's post.
 
raid 1 shouldnt be used as a backup device unless used in conjunction with another separate device for multiple copies.

RAID 1 is perfect.

edit - Please don't try to discredit my post with your "10 minutes" comment. Especially as you've basically duplicated my advice for a software solution.

I have given a) an 'on the fly' and b) backup solution that can be kept off site etc.

Off topic now, but with decent RAID control, no it won't. Part of the issue with cheap NAS units and old RAID configurations for PCs was that they are/were dependant on the hardware, where as the more expensive ones actually use the LVM to control the RAID so if the hardware does go south you can still recover. These are obviously more expensive and also the way many of the modern Linux based NAS units work (using IBM's LVM ? as that is hardware independent).

Slightly off-topic, but that would mean a disc failing & a RAID controller within the time it takes to get a new disk. I would say thats pretty remote possiblity, depending on how long it takes you to replace the disc.

edit- I think I may have mis-read your point there- did you mean just the RAID controller dying?

dapprman - ive had HP server RAID controllers fail on more than one occasion and all arrays have been trashed forcing a restore from tape.
While midrange, rather than PC, I've had not only disk controller failures, but I've also taken disks from one IBM server and brought them on to an other, complete with mirror, with no problem at all.

IBM's LVM (originally developed for OS2, central to AIX, and been freely available for Linux for at least 4 or 5 years) stores volume group information on each disk header, making the mirror (and in deed disk groups) independent of hardware.
 
just to clear a few things up, i keep banging on about RAID not being the single answer to everyones data storage needs because if it means one persons data is saved as a result of my advise then i'll be happy.

at the end of the day despite the amount of disks in the RAID array its still a single device and is prone to failure/fire/theft etc. good practice is having 2 copies of data store on completely separate devices.

in my 12 or so years in IT/server support ive seen a couple of RAID configurations/controllers fail and on all occasions the data on the disks has been lost despite being mirrored etc. granted its probably a rare event but if RAID was so infalible maybe i should sell off the tape library attached to the SAN at work, no of course i wont because the day (albeit that may never come) that we have mass hardware failure and lose all of the data i still want a copy of the data and a job..

thats not meant as a rant or an argument or a finger pointing. when RAID works its very good but all im interested in is drumming home the fact that everyone should have 2 copies of their valuable data on 2 separate devices.

So is RAID useful from a business continuity angle, but ideally you still need an offsite back up?

I have used RAID befor what I did was to make a pair of disk then take one out and replace it with a new one this then copyed the system to it and I kept one HD as my back up
Not got RAID now and looking for something to make a rescue disk my self on to my removeable 1TG HD

Headless Lois - RAID 1 or 5 is good for anyone wanting another string to their disaster recovery bow.

I've only had 2 RAID card failures and a handful of RAID'd hard drives die on me over the past 18 years. As I suggested, RAID is an on the fly 'backup' as such but should be coupled with another offline solution such as a disk image, NAS or removable disk.

At the office I've setup mirrored servers running RAID5 and dual offsite NAS devices. We also have a server at one of the Directors homes which is syncronised with the mirrored servers on a daily basis. Unless Derby gets nuked we can recover everything and be online within minutes.

i only put the edit in because someone said pretty much what i did before i did. i loaded the thread up originally then got sidetracked and posted without refreshing.. hence the edit.
