Computer boot problem

Hi all

My Dad's PC which I built for him has developed a rather serious problem.

When you hit the power button nothing happens (at all). You can hit it a few more times with the same effect. However, several presses later (and some time elapsed) there is slight hum from the PSU. A couple more presses and the PC seems to start. Fans start whirring and there is definitely power to the CD drive. However, there is no output to the monitor nor is there any POST beep of any kind.

Very weird!

I'm hoping it's just the PSU as that's reasonably easy to replace. However, I'm think I might need a new CPU/motherboard/RAM?

Any thoughts?

yup I'd say PSU
easy enough to replace - especially if you built it!:nuts:
 
Did it just not turn on one day or did it drop dead when working?

tried removing the power cable for 10 minutes?

Failing power supplies can sometimes take out other stuff when they fail... fingers crossed.
 
Might be worth a check of the cable to the motherboard's are still properly connected. The power button on ATX boards require a couple of extra connections to the motherboard before the computer will start up. If the PSU is failing, swap it fast....

I build PCs and that is definately a PSU on its last legs but dont worry they are quite cheap and easy to replace if you need advice pm me would be glad to help

Yeah i go with power supply also, what level of spec is the pc is it worth another power supply but as i expect its not overly burdened then the power supply will be cheap unless your father is a hard core gaming champ with his own server then the power supply would be very exspensive.
