ive been having some issues recently that ive put down to heat. Instant crashes when playing a game with all kinds of speaker noises.

I opened the case and put a desk fan next to it and it seemed to have solved the problem until today. It crashed in windows and wouldnt restart right away. Sometimes it would get to the windows7 swirls and then the monitor would go black and then nothing.
Just now when I tried I got strange colour lines like an old c64 game.

Could it be my gfx card that has gone down the pan?

Any other suggestions of what I could try to find out what it is?

I just tried again and it asked me if I wanted to repair windows, i did, it went all the way through the first process and went to reset and just turned off the monitor and nothing happened.

Sounds like the graphics card. If you have another then you could try a swap out. If the card has a fan make sure it is working too.

fan is working fine. I dont have another card with me here but its not massivly old, maybe a year or so..

Managed start to boot but now I see big red letter saying overclocking failed, resetting to defaults etc go into bios, went in there and reset to defaults but it just fails to restart. CPU temps are at 30c

oh and I havnt overclocked it

Hmm, you may have to reseat the CPU and redo the thermal paste as it may be missing/spread incorrectly. Check for dust build up too (sorry if this is all a bit day one stuff).

Dont do this!, 30 Degrees is a great temp, you'll risk creating another problem for yourself!

I've had Graphics cards fail on me after 6 months and 2 years. A capacitor fell off my first and the second one just showed a very scrambled image.

If you let us know the card, or the slot type, you may be able to borrow a card of someone here to help diagnose the problem. Im assuming its PCI-E ?

My ASUS board occasionally throws an overclook failed message at me (I set the RAM speed myself because the board rates it incorrectly) Im not sure why though.

Another vote for graphics card here :)

Taking it out, wiping the contact strip with an alcohol wipe and re seating it wouldn't hurt.

Oh and when the system crashes turn the power off at the mains for 10 seconds or so just to make sure the gremlin will get reset (if it can be). there is still power to the mobo when the PC is off at the front switch.

If I remember right its an ATI Radion 4600 HD or maybe 4800 HD. I would look but im dealing with a splitting headache :(

Its PCI-E anyone in the Ashford, Kent area that has one I can try that would be great.
As an extra test I just tried an old hard disk with vista on and its also not getting into windows.

ATI cards are prone to this.
Did you try to remove the Graphics card alone and tried with a different hard disk for booting windows? or with the card in it.?

Can you try the monitor output from the board PCI directly instead of ATI card.
Whenever you hear the alien noises in your speakers because of card failures, try to restart your PC in safe mode ( using F8 control), run diagnostic tools, reload the drivers and then restart the PC.

you may have to clean the GFX card fan, re-paste and re-seat the Heatsink on the graphics card.

my sound card bit the dust the other day, turns out it was the contact pins on the PCI-e edge connector, cleaned it with isopropyl alcohol, works fine now

worth a try cleaning the contacts

Crack out the good old can of compressed air and the vacuum cleaner. Reduced my temperature drastically..

If you check the event log in the system management console it should tell you why the PC is crashing , this can be accessed by right clicking the my computer icon then clicking manage and then looking in the event viewer ,this will give you all the info you need to solve the problem
