Computer running very slow

It's a windows xp machine that always seems to be doing something. I have looked in Scheduled Tasks and there is Google Update Task Machine UA that is scheduled to run every 1 hour from 17:13 for 24 hours every day starting 27/4/2011.

last run time was 18:13:00 29/5/11
Next run time 19:13:00 29/5/11

What is this programme and do I need it. If not how do I get rid of it or change its settings.

If you download a trial version of System Mechanic (if you don't already have it) and click the performance tab you will be able to see how much of your memory (PF Usage) and CPU is being used by background processes.

The processes tab will also show you all the processes running.

On one of my computers I have 1Gb memory and a BG usage of 400Mb which is OK.

This is one of the reasons why more memory often means a faster computer.

how do I find ''Tasks''.........Vista..........:bonk:

2......just bought a 23'' W/Screen LED.....:clap:
very bright - but sorted on-screen controls and reduced to 70% = ok
[no instructions book from LG.]

installed drivers from the CD all ok

also on the CD is an ''Easy Set' which controls monitor from PC
halfway through install it says
'' Setup will disable the UAC. Continue .? yes/no"

what is this .? and am I safe to ''disable''

UAC= User account Control. Its to stop people like yourself changng things on the computer that might change or disable certain features.
The first thing I do when I set up a new computer is turn it off completely as it a pain in the ass.
Yes its safe to turn off, but just dont start deleting things willy nilly.
 
i wouldnt necessarily go disabling UAC, it is there for a reason and its another line of defence against processes changing system settings.

yes it can be annoying if you change settings regularly, otherwise leave it on.
 
If you must disable it, disable it before you install anything. It doesn't just give notifications, some programs designed with UAC in mind can fail to work properly if you disable it after installing them.

UAC... Off here (but then you'd expect that wouldn't you ;)). Not sure I'd recommend everyone turning it off mind you...
