COMRes.dll not found

can anyone advise

I had a very virus infected pc. I have managed to get AVG (free) installed and it has sorted out most of it.

However now yahoo messenger will not run as it says "COMRes.dll was not found - re-installing may fix this."

So i downloaded messanger but clicking on the install exe just brings up the egg timer for a few seconds then nothing happens.

Tried to uninstall messenger but that just hung.

I have constant messages from various exe stating this dll is missing, e.g. GoogleUpdate.exe

Anyone any ideas?

Thanks

June

Sounds like your registry has suffered a bit with your virus problem.

To be perfectly honest, after you've had virus infection, you should really backup your data, format the machine, and start afresh. Your PC supplier will usually provide a restore CD that will do all this for you and set up a clean Windows install.

Backup, backup, backup though. If you really don't want to do that, then you need to uninstall the applications that are throwing errors, then run a registry cleaner over your machine (and another virus scan for good measure), then re-install the applications.

if that's all that's wrong - and uninstall doesn't work, just delete the IM folder
it's something like

C:\Program Files\Yahoo!

then go for a re-install

Download CCCleaner (its free) and do a registry clean then try to reinstall.

Often the links to dll's are lost when a virus gets hold af the exe.

Hi all - thanks for the replies. I have managed to get the missing dll back by getting a copy and now the error has gone away.

The avg found 523 nasties and has healed or removed 522 of them. So PC is up and running again for the moment.

I realise that I may have to get windows re-installed at some point. I love the way people bandy that about like it is something we should all know how to do and the consequences of doing so !

Although I work in IT O/S install is not something I have ever had to do !

Thanks again for taking the time to reply :)

It might be worth running the system file checker to see if any Windows files are needing sorted.

Wiping and formatting a drive will 100% guarantee the removal of any nastie on that drive compared to spending hours with various virus\spam\trojan removal tools where you have to rely on the software finding and removing all the nasties.

Also take into account the amount of time it takes to run all this software plus look for missing files that have been removed because they were to badly infected. Now compare that to the time it takes to format and reinstall. Sometime the formatting route is quicker and more secure.
