I was wondering if any of you could help. We have just joined a local photography club and they have frequent competitions, just club ones, no prizes :) and we are being encouraged to enter.
The next one is called 'five on the theme' and we struggled to get much of an explanation from the few people we asked as to the concept.
Has anyone got any experience of this sort of competition and what might be expected?
We dont know if we have got to enter 5 photos on a theme of our choice or if the pictures need to be in sequence and tell a story.
Any help or advice would be appreciated!

thanks
Bev

Seems like you have answered your own question.
What'll happen if you get it wrong anyway, do they take your camera off you and send you packing?
Shoot what makes you happy.
You should probably remember that noone has ever won a camera club comp without using colour popping though!

lol, I think we are just a bit shy and don't want to make a fool of ourselves in front of a hundred people :P, especially as they often have a pro judge critiquing the pics eek!
Ok, I have made my mind up, I'm gonna skip this comp and see what other people do and wait till next year lol

It's only May, the comps canny be that regular if the next one is next year.

Don`t wait till next year ...have ago now.

Photography club competitions often have ambiguous titles or concepts to allow personal freedom and also push members to produce something different.

It`s how you interpret the concept is what matters, you can`t look foolish if the photos you take are your interpretation of what you thought the concept was.

As for members not very forthcoming with an explanation... well it is a competition and they either don`t want to give you their ideas or they don`t yet understand the concept themselves.

The concept `five on a theme` is just that a concept/idea, Obviously `five` has to be in there somewhere whether it be the amount of images or something else and I would hazzard a guess that they have to be somehow related hence the `theme`.
As for producing five indivual prints ..... think of the logistics.... 100 members, five prints each .... 500 images to review ...not very practical but on the other hand if you feel you can`t get your idea over without 5 indidvual prints then go for it, you can also put five images on one print. The real art to this concept is to produce 5 totally different images on one theme... getting one good image of something is hard, to produce five different pushes the boundarys, which is what the club competitions are design to do.

As it`s your first time go for something simple like eyes, hands, milk bottle tops.. whatever just keep it simple.

Don`t ever pass up the invitation to have your images professionally critqued.
Whether the crit is good or bad you will find it is always constructive.

Take five photographs of five hands.

Make them detailed holding five different things job done! :)

If you belong to a club you must have a few phone numbers of the committee members so why not give them a ring tell them you are new members and can they explain what is required for the 'five on a theme' competition.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I have got two weeks till the submission date so I will keep my eye out for some inspiration for something I really like the feel of. :)

Once again, thank you for the helpful comments, especially about getting critique, I know I wont learn or get better if I dont show anyone my stuff.

Don't wait to next year, just dive in.

If you manage to create something different than a hundred other people then you'll stand out and that's a good thing :)

Best of luck
