Hi hope I can get a reply in time.
I have just been asked to take photos at a concert tonight. I have a canon 40d and a 70-200mm f2.8 lens any ideas for settings to get best results??
I am assuming no flash

There are no hard and fast rules.
Everything depends on what kind of concert and what kind of venue.

Almost certain to be no flash; but there are exceptions to every rule; check when you get there........
And take in RAW to give the best chance of recovering detail and calming down any aggressive colour casts.
If it's a stage venue, use earplugs as the best spots tend to be in front of the speaker stacks.

As above but for a base start go for either manual or av mode. F/2.8 ISO 1600.
That's where I always start and adjust as needed. You might find 70mm too close if you are in the pit. I tended to use a 24-70 most of the time but depends entirely on the venue.

Earplugs are essential. Don't try and be "cool" and go without.

If you can work in manual, work in manual, if not then Av as said is best. Start at iso 1600 and see what shutter speed you get. If it is too low (and remember the golden rule shutter speed = length of your lens plus one) then you may end up shooting at 3200. Shoot, check review repeat.

Remember it is better to have a sharp shot that is noisy than a blurred shot that is clear of noise.

sorry to be late with this info but don't know if you have heard of Jared Polin, he is a great concert photographer IMHO. If you sign up for his newsletter he'll send you an e-book on concert photograpy, go to froknowsphoto.com and the bit you need is on the right half way down. I had a quick look for you and there's a video on a photo taken at a concert on the front page
