OK I am a little addicted by the L lenses as is everyone else here and going crazy buying them. Is there a L lens anonymous group for us?

Basically this is my kit:
5D Mark II with a 24-105 L f4 IS USM lens, 70-200 L f4 IS USM, 17-40 L, 100mm L USM macro 50mm 1.4 (very old lens) and 85mm 1.8...ooh and a 50D (which I don't want to part with) and then I have 10-22mm as well

Told you I was addicted!!!

Anyway my dilemma is, I have a couple of weddings coming up that friends have asked me to shoot. Do I swap (or keep) my 24-105 L for the 24-70 L (i do like the thought of 2.8 during weddings but then I have my primes and the 24-105 L has image stabilisation...isn't it better that your photos are pinsharp?)

And do I swap my 70-200 L f4 IS for a 70-200 f2.8 IS/non IS? I know this is very costly.

OR AND THIS IS A VERY BIG OR.....

Do I stick to my current lenses and use my primes instead? So confused and I need your help

Thanks everyone
NB

I would stick to your lenses.
5d2 is very capable camera at high iso so it should be fine with f4...

It was more for the depth of field shots, not really done any weddings before as the main photographer (just as a guest) Definitely want the happy couple to be glad they chose me to do their shots

I shoot with F4 lenses at weddings, and not really had an issue as yet- though only as a 2nd. Just means choosing your background a bit more carefully

Use your primes. Presumably that's what you got them for.

IMHO 70-200L 4 IS is preferable to that big f/2.8 anyway, and without IS it's a defo. Same story with the 24-70L, though both are fab lenses.

Most of the time DoF at f/2.8 is a bit of a liability, and almost impossible to use on more than one person - they're never in the same plane of focus. F/4 is more practical.

Remember you get 1.2 stops more effective depth of field on the 50D vs full frame (f/number x crop factor).

Welcome to the L-coholic club! Your gear looks more than capable to me. You have some primes for the dark scenes. You could obviously add either 24 or 35mm at 1.4 and let 10-22 go. Perhaps see how you get on with the current gear first.

I am contemplating selling the 10-22 to fund my next L lens, however I don't think it could buy me the 35mm 1.4L :( I tend to use my 5D Mk II and have the 50D for the primes when I am out and about and this has worked well. Bit petrified for the wedding as that I won't have that extra stop...hmmmm

An extra stop isn't much. One click on the 5D2's ISO. You've got a decent flash gun I hope. You need that far more than fancy lenses for a wedding. And know how to use it ;)

I have the Canon 580EX II, I am terrible I tend to leave it mounted on my camera and just use it on ETTL. I am lazy what can i say?

For a fluid social situation like a wedding, you'd be mad to do it any other way. You know how to moderate the E-TTL exposure though I hope ;)

And you have a Lumiquest or Stofen, or are at least familiar with using the pull-out bounce card? These are the things you should be thinking about.

I have no clue how to moderate the ETTL exposure on the flash  The wedding is still 3 weeks away and I was going to try and read as many articles on my flash as possible and watch videos.

I do have a Stofen though which is kinda doubling up as a piggy bank at the moment for my next L lens

Get reading and get practising. I was beginning to think you were just indulging your lens lust ;)

You could get another flash and work out a couple of set pieces, backlighting the dress/veil, first dance etc. Plenty of ideas on line to create some special shots. Three inches less DoF is neither here nor there.
