Confused - Sync Speed

Hi all,

My EOS 400d specs show a sync speed of X-Sync: 1/200 sec, so why bother going any faster (up to 1/4000 sec) if the picture will have my shutter on it?

Or (as I suspect) am I missing something here?

The max synch speed only applies to flash photography.

This is the FLASH sync speed for when you are using flash.

You can dial your shutterspeed lower/slower than that to get ambient background but it wont go faster unless you set your flashgun onto High Speed mode.

Aye, but high speed sync means less power to the flash. Also, don't worry too much about shutter speed when using flash. The aperture determine how bright the flash-lit subject will be, the shutter speed/aperture determines the level of the ambient light.

Ahhh, I see.

Not having used much flash photography yet, I guess I need to experiment a little.

Thanks all, cleared that up nicely!

just to let you know the sync speed is actually 1/250th on the 400D that is the limit after that you get a black bar appear at the bottom of the photo
