Connect camera to PC and net goes off!?

:thinking:If i connect my canon or nikon cameras via usb to pc: after about 3mins the internet will go off, and i have to restart the puter to get it going again ! its a bit of a pain! any ideas guys??

btw i got windows xp and connect via wifi to bt hub
 
I was going to say that possibly the camera connection was shorting out your network card/modem but if it's after 3 mins it seems a bit odd!!
 
I bet it is your computer 'helpfully' shutting down usb ports to save power.

Can't remember where to turn it off - possibly in device manager?

Ben is probably right if your modem is a USB one, I've had motherboards that were not capable of powering more than a couple of USB things especially if one or more of them drew a lot of power. The results were just as you described.
 
Sounds like you are on a laptop

Go into the control panel and click on your personalize settings for the desktop and then clicck on screensaver(yes screensaver) at the bottom of the screen you se power settings click here and adjust so your laptop turns off after one hr or what you feel is best and also alter hdd powerdown time and the rest .... no bull just good advice

AArr so the internet usb cable will power off? if I switch ports will it change that?
 
NOOOOOOOOO a usb cable has absolutely nothing to do with powering off any pc its a load of old tosh

Nope. The only way to change it is to find the panel (somewhere) that says "Allow the computer to power off this device to save power" or words to that effect and disable the 'helpful' setting

Power save is no good dangermouse they are set to never turn anything off??
 
LETS LOOK AT IT NOTHER WAY if your usb could power down how would it recognise all your printers ect without powering them down or any other usb device so ye a load of old bull me thinks oops my printer went to sleep NOT come on christs sake if you are giving advice at least make sure the advice is correct the poor person could have deleted important usb settings on your advice to install others and lost some files they need
 
just a quick question why are you connecting your cam to your computer via a usb cable ?
 
I have two card readers one usb to the pc in a 2.5 bay and one in my printer which is my best choice for reading the card as it seems faster access time

my printer and router are all wifi on dongles via usb as are the three laptops running of the network (sorry my usb wont power these off ) yet my printer reader is best so far

Calm down. You sir, are completely wrong.

Windows can power down USB ports any time it likes, unless you specifically tell it not to. It is especially good at doing this on laptops - if you run on battery, for example, the default mode is to disable network connections to save battery power.

Come one yes we all know thats there its there for everything including drivers but who is going to switch it off here and not know they have done it for gods sake ....you were on about an automatic setting that switches off as a bloody power saving setting so get you facts right

Ok this is you original post and if I was a complete newbie I would be looking in the device manager and turning anything on thats there

Windows does switch stuff of to save power. It chooses which to switch off based on the power saving scheme you have defined, or the one it has picked for you.

You can alter what it switches off by using the property page I illustrated.

Alternatively you can go looking for ghosts switching off your devices because "no usb can do this"

Your choice.

It's on by default on most laptops dude, therefore it could well be causing the issue. I would bet that ensuring the box is unticked will resolve the problem the OP has.
 
I am now on a mission to find out what causes this as I personally have never come across it so ben any ideas as to where to look are welcome

Yes re read the thread but its the internet that goes off so maybe its a time out problem
 
just checked Babytigers lappy and that setting is ON but it does not interfere with any usb settings or her internet connection
 
Control Panel.... System.... Device Manager... right click on the USB hub to which your camera is connected.

Uncheck the power box from every device you want on all the time. The power management settings in the control panel are very crude, and the device manager setting fine tunes the power scheme you want.

Disk drives and printers aren't a problem because windows automagically wakes them up when written to. USB Modems/Cameras may not be written to for a while (or ever for cameras) and so windows will shut them down when it feels like it, unless told otherwise.

I am off back to my Linux laptop now - using this XP malarky makes me feel too much like being at work.

I can find this for your information but as for the settings in code they are a little tricky to find so if you ca find them c++ let me know when you have ok
