Connecting Canon Cameras to Smart phones/PC via WIFI , does it work ?

Hello all,

I've tried for ever to get my Sony Camera to connect to my Smart Phone and PC and it has never worked, I was thinking about buying a second hand lens for the Sony but have realized I could get a Used Canon camera with a few lenses and accessories for the same price and hopefully some of the WIFI related functions would work. Is this the case or is Canon just as bad ?

Yes some Canons will connect to your mobile. when you press the Wi-Fi button on the camera it becomes a Wi-Fi hotspot and you connect to that hotspot in your phones Wi-Fi settings. After that open the canon app on your mobile and you can transfer images, see what your camera is seeing and control your camera from your mobile
 
Thanks redsnappa , I have seen a few people with Canons doing this in the past but didn't really look into it too much.
 
I control my Canon 5D4 by WiFi sometimes using an iPad. My Sony does not have WiFi.

This works quite well with my 80D - I use my tablet as a large live-view viewfinder which I can use while standing even with the camera on the floor. You can also use the WiFi to store the photos on your phone/tablet but these will be jpegs only.

I think that they are all difficult. I've tried it with a Canon 250D, Sony A7 IV, and an Olympus EM1 Mk III.
The Sony belongs to a freind, and he says that it just doesn't work. However, when I borrowed it, it worked reasonably well.

My feeling is that the documentation, and implementation, is very poor with all three.
 
I have no problems connecting my Sony A6000 to either my phone or tablet using Sony Imaging Edge for wireless transfer.

I DID have a problem with a previous phone, but traced that to a 'feature' of the phone that, when connecting to a new WiFi network, it would test the 'quality' of the internet connection (I assume by checking connection to a reference website) - since the Camera provided no internet, the phone woudl immediately disconnect and search for a 'better' alternative.
Once I figured that, I just switched that function off before connecting the camera, and everything worked as expected.
 
I use the Canon app with my M5 and it works really well. I come back with some photos after a morning out, press the WiFi button on the camera and it gives me the choice of sending them to Canon storage on the web or to the phone. I make my choice and off they go.
 
I will have to try swearing louder at the Sony ! I've tried 6 or 7 different phones and it just doesn't want to connect, oddly I've used my phone as a remote shutter/viewer without any difficulty ! but it just will not transfer photos.

That's exactly what I need , With the Sony I have to take the case off, physically take the SD card out and put it in the PC as it uses a none standard protocol I cannot even connect via USB. The Sony is the only one I'vde ever had a problem with, which is a shame as I brought it as an improvement to my other cameras and it just hasn't been in many ways.
