Conserving Battery

Hello all

I'm out in the countryside of berwick-upon-tweed and being the bumbling person I am, I've forgotten to bring my cam charger. I was walking around the beach snapping and I thought, does it take less power turning it on and off again every couple of minutes (given it does a sensor clean) or less power just leaving it on and not touching the buttons...?
Answers please

Not sure about the best power conservation, but you can switch off the sensor cleaning function I believe.

I was in a similar situation when I went to Frankfurt in the weekend.
I turned off the Automatic Sensor cleaning, disabled the review screen and also turned off IS on my 17-55mm.
However, my battery was soon drained. I think the 17-55mm may be quite harsh on batteries as I used to get a fair amount of shots when I was down to two bars on the battery meter but at the weekend it seemed to decline a lot quicker than when I had my 17-40L.

If you can, turn off auto image review and reduce LCD brightness.

Or how about turning off the LCD altogether. Your core settings (aperture, shutter speed and ISO) are viewable in the viewfinder anyway. There's a setting in the options which prevents the screen from turning on when the camera comes on, and if you turn off automatic sensor cleaning, flicking the switch does nothing but ready the camera for the click. No fancy business, no messing about.

thers a load of stuff there i didn't even think about, nice one!
ive been walking around with the IS on my 17-55, do'h.
how necessary do you think the sensor cleaning is? if you do it manually once everyday, should that do the trick?
I leave the battery out of my camera when not in use as well, because even just being in the body, drains it slowly

I offer this from Ken Rockwell:

"I don't bother turning it OFF, since it doesn't use the batteries while sleeping. I only turn it off if it's going in a case where the shutter might get tapped unintentionally."
... OK he wrote that about the 30D, but he has also written the same for Nikon cameras and so I assume it's pretty universal. I have taken to leaving my Nikon cameras on while not packed away and haven't had any problems with battery life.

Hi. I think Ken is refering to cameras which automatically power off after a while. He was also a bit wrong saying that the 30D was only brought back to life by pressing the shutter release and was therefore safe. My 30D was brought back bu touching almost any button.

I do sensor cleaning manually every few lens changes. I can have a lens stay on the camera for days (that can be a lot of ons and offs) so theres no sense in having the sensor clean itself every time if the lens hasn't come off.

no sense in sensor cleaning...got it

Set it to go to 'sleep' after a short period of time, doesn't automatically clean the sensor and is an instant start up when needed (again, without sensor cleaning), and has been said above, minimise IS use and also playback time for photos, rear lcd use etc.

Oh, and have a good time
